Beautiful skin has always been popular and what better way to maintain beautiful skin than by using nature’s products?

Check out these simple tropical recipes that I have researched and start on your way to having beautiful and healthy skin from the comfort of your own home.

Just a brief note about homemade lotions: after the mixture is complete you must use quickly and store properly. It is best to make mixtures in small amounts because of the limited shelf life. If the lotions are stored away from the sun and kept cool than there is a chance that they may last up to 3 weeks. However, there are products out there that can add preservation to your products. For example: A mild preservative such as Liquipar Optima may be recommended to prevent growth of harmful bacteria and to protect against a wide range of microorganisms.

Note: If any of the ingredients in these recipes causes an allergic reaction, please discontinue use or do not use at all.

Coconut Milk Skin Soother

1/2 cup coconut milk
1 tbsp fine oatmeal

Heat the coconut milk on stove or microwave until lukewarm. Add to the oatmeal and mix well. Apply to rough (perhaps your face, elbows, knees and heels). Leave on for 10-15 minutes. Rinse off thoroughly.

Smooth Body Lotion

This is a quick, easy, very smooth lotion that absorbs nicely into the skin. A plant based emulsifying wax is used. This mixture makes approximately 2 of the 4 oz size bottles. This lotion thickens quickly.

Melt together until barely melted:

* 8 – 10 grams Emulsifying wax (approx. 2.5 tablespoons)
* 70 ml Vegetable oil (try jojoba, apricot, sunflower, avocado)
* 20 ml Vegetable glycerine

Add and blend with hand mixer for under 1 minute:

* 130 ml Room temperature or warmed distilled water (or combine aloe vera, floral water, witch hazel, etc as part of all of liquid)
*1 pinch Citric acid (helps to reduce bacteria growth and acts as ph balancer)
* 10 – 30 drops essential oil

Options:

5 ml Grapefruit Seed Extract or Benzoin (preservative)
5 ml Shea butter
Replacing part of the liquid with Floral waters, witch hazel, aloe vera

2-4 ml Liquipar Optima (full spectrum preservative)
Pour into sterilized containers, keep cool and enjoy! If you like a thinner lotion, try diluting with a bit of floral water or use slightly less emulsifying wax next time around.
