Honeymooning on the Golf Courses of Pagosa Springs, Colorado

Spending their honeymoon golfing may make many newlyweds (especially brides) cringe, but with a little preparation it can be the special, relaxing time together that all couples are looking for after the stress of the wedding is over.

Both avid golfers, my husband and I spent our honeymoon on the beautiful courses of Pagosa Springs, Colorado. The Pagosa Springs Golf Club includes 27 holes with breathtaking views of the Continental Divide. Pinon Nine and Ponderosa Nine are mountain courses lined with Ponderosa Pines and Meadows Nine is a links-style course with beautiful views of mountain lakes and streams.

We golfed 18 holes on 3 of the 5 days we spent in Pagosa Springs. We were fortunate to be able to golf on weekdays in early June. The weather was fabulous and we practically had the course all to ourselves. The wildlife and scenery made for a breathtaking beginning to our life together as a married couple.

We spent the rest of our stay enjoying the comfortable suite at Fairfield Pagosa Springs, a gorgeous two-bedroom condo with full kitchen and jacuzzi. We also played tennis, went swimming, and experienced an unforgettable hot-air balloon ride.

If you do decide to fit in some golf on the honeymoon and both individuals are not avid golfers, some things you might want to consider before the honeymoon:

  • Sign up for lessons. A few lessons will significantly reduce the frustration level of novice golfers. Sign up together or as a surprise for your partner.
  • Consider adding new equipment to the wedding gift wish list. New clubs or shoes can greatly add to the enjoyment of your time out on the course.
  • Keep the golf schedule light. While some avid golfers think nothing of five or six hours out on the course, keep the schedule light, less than three hours is best.
  • Be sure to schedule other activities. Flexibility and fun are key. Balance your time on the course with other relaxing activities.
  • Consider riding along. Many courses will allow non-playing partners to ride along. This is a great way for both newlyweds to enjoy the scenery and spend a relaxing time together.
