Hotels in Pahar Ganj, Delhi, India

Looking for hotels in Delhi in December made us realize that type of blankets, hot water, and the possibility of heaters and important details often overlooked in reviews. Since 6 months of the year the most important thing is AC, staying HOT may not be a concern. We were cold on a lot of our India trip, so here’s some advice about hotels in Pahar Ganj. We checked out most of the budget hotels on the main strip. I speak Hindi so we’re pretty sure we got the “normal” rates. All rooms had private bathrooms unless I mentioned shared bathrooms. Prices quoted are from early 2008 and may have gone up due to inflation.

We ended up picking this one for our second stay in Delhi. It has a nice, clean lobby with comfortable couches. Clean sheets, soft mattresses and hot water, but no heater. If you want an extra blanket it’s a 100 rupees more. TVs are in rooms but that means your neighbors may be watching them at a loud volume at any time of the day or night. Staying here was ok but it was really loud since we stayed on the first floor. Even the staff was watching TV in the lobby at a high volume. People are constantly coming in and out of the hotel and will talk right outside your room. Bring ear plugs. A plus was that it was close to the railway station.

Fashionable hotel set above an art expo selling handicrafts, tea, incense, jewelry, and perfume at a fair price. If you don’t stay in the hotel it’s worth it to check out the rooms full of colorful beads and about fifty different scents of incense. Everything has prices marked. It’s one of the most organized shops I’ve seen on the subcontinent, and the prices were not bad. I’m willing to pay a few more rupees to shop undisturbed.

The hotel had bright clean rooms complete with mini fridges and 24 hour hot water. Rooms were big with desks, couches and king size beds. The only reason we didn’t choose this place was because the mattresses were a bit too firm for us. There were no heaters available but blankets were of the thick and fluffy variety.

Hotel Star Paradise – 400 Rps/ double + 225 rupees per night for electric heater

Not a bad option if you need to warm up for a few nights. This was the only hotel in Pahar Ganj that looked like it had a reliable heater. We actually only saw a room that was being cleaned so we can not vouch for clean sheets or scrubbed toilets, but it looks like they try. Mattresses were soft and comfy.

Hotel Star Palace – 300 rps/double + 50 rps per night for heater

Why the same chain of hotels would have one heater offered for 225 rupees and one for 50 rupees is a question you should ask if looking to book this hotel. We saw some strange 6 inch wide heaters in other hotels, so we’re guessing they might offer this type of heat for 50 rps/night. For just 350 rps/night you probably won’t get much extra heat from that heater. Electricity costs too much to offer for that price.

This place had comfy mattresses, warm blankets, friendly staff, clean bathrooms, and nice dÃ?©cor. The rooms were small, but that may be an advantage when you’re shivering under the sheets. Only negative side was that the sheets didn’t look as if they’d been washed. If you’re bringing your own, go for it!

Hotel Down Town – 250-300 rps/double
Address: 4583 Main Bazar, Pahar Ganj
Phone: 4154-1529

Hot water comes by the bucket system in this place. We weren’t really interested since rooms were a bit grimy. They seemed surprised we had come there asking about hot water and heaters.

Hotel Rak International – 450-650 Rps/double

Address: 820 Main Bazar, Chowk Bawli, 6 Tooti, Pahar Ganj
Phone: 2356-2478, 2358-6508

Their business card seems modern with so many email addresses, but rooms were a bit shabby on the inside. 24 hour hot water is available at this hotel which is located a little bit away from the main drag. You can expect clean sheets, bigger rooms, TVs, and soft mattresses, but don’t expect peace and quiet at this place. It’s located right next to a shrine where people love to sing and beat drums well into the night. If you’re a sound sleeper and don’t mind outdated and dusty dÃ?©cor, this place might just do it for you.

Sonu Guest House – 350 rps/double
Address: 4563 Main Bazar, Pahar Ganj
Phone: 2356-2796, 2356-1874

Once we saw the “hybrid” toilet we were outta this place. How you can stand on the top of the western style toilet (in the foot grooves) and go is beyond me. How you can sit on the toilet, which has not been cleaned from people standing on it with muddy shoes, is also something I didn’t want to find out. This place boasted 24 hour water, but due to the dirty rooms and hard mattresses we wouldn’t recommend it.

Run of the mill small budget place with 24 hour hot water and cable TV. You pay for what you get. Rooms were ok but dark and small. You might have to walk through someone’s laundry to get to yours.

Hotel Shelton – 600 rps/double + 150 with small heater
Address: 5043 Main Bazar, Pahar Ganj
Phone: 2358-0575, 2358-0576
Email: SheltonH@rediffmail.com

Large rooms with warm blankets make this a good option out of the bunch. Kept clean with 24 hr hot water, cable TV, and a rooftop restaurant run by Nepalis. The only downside was the hard mattresses. Reserve a room on the side opposite the road for less street din.

Hotel Scot – 300 rps/double with heater
Address: 4581 Main Bazar, Pahar Ganj
Phone: 2358-8418

Although we did not see the alleged heater, this looked like a good budget option. Located slightly off the main road. 24 hr hot water available.

Royal Guest House – 500-600 rps/double
Address: 4464 Main Bazar, Pahar Ganj
Phone: 2358-6176
Email: royalguesthouse@yahoo.com

Two options of rooms were available when we looked. The 500 rps rooms were a bit smaller but clean and quiet. The 600 rps rooms were bigger and had nicer windows. It was quiet place with 24 hr hot water. I honestly can’t remember why we didn’t choose this one, but I think it’s because it was a bit further from the train station than the others.

Hare Krishna Guest House – 200-400 rps/double
Address: 1572 Main Bazar, Pahar Ganj
Phone: 5154-1340

Friendly service and a good deal in spring time, but we found ourselves too cold to sleep while staying here in December. They gave us extra blankets (thin ones) free of charge, but the blankets were not very warm. Sheets were clean and rooms came in a variety of sizes. We took a bigger one with a private bath, but it was next to a communal sink so we had some noise outside our room. Walls were paper thin so we could hear our neighbors showering and someone buffing the floor (with an electric buffing machine) at 5am. Comfy lounge and a tasty rooftop caf©.
