How the LIHEAP Program Can Help You!

With cold winters and rising temperatures in the summer, the costs of energy just keeps getting more expensive. And not to mention with the price of gas, we are all feeling the effects in our wallets.

If you have low income or you are a senior citizen and disabled with a monthly fixed income, then you may qualify for the LIHEAP program in your area. LIHEAP stands for Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. The LIHEAP program helps provide free money from the government, which pays on your utility bill. It is a one-time payment that will appear as a credit on your monthly utility statement. This is a big help for those who are in need and have a tight monthly budget that they need to stick with.

The amount of money that households’ will receives depends on their gross monthly income and the number of individuals that live in that household at the time of application. You do not need to have an overdue or high bill to receive assistance. As long as you meet the required income guidelines, your family is eligible to sign up for the LIHEAP program. There is also Emergency Assistance available should your utilities become disconnected or if you have received a disconnection notice.

The LIHEAP program begins starting September 1st for those who are 60+ or those who receive disability. Everybody else can sign up beginning November 1st. Also in the summer time, where funds may be present, summer assistance is also available to those who are in need as well. They must be 60+, disabled, or have children in the household who are 2 and under. These fund are usually distributed late July or sometime in August.

The LIHEAP program is a wonderful quality program for those who are having trouble meeting their monthly bills, or just need an extra push to get through the month.
