How to Clean Stained Canning Jars

Because they’re made out of glass, it’s easy to wash juice and food remnants out of canning jars. What creates hard-to-remove stains on them is typically hard water. It leaves behind ugly scum and mineral deposits on the glass both inside and out. There are several ways to make the glass sparkle again. Read this informative article and learn how to clean stained canning jars.

1. White Vinegar and Baking Soda

Place the stopper in a sink or use a large container such as a basin. Lay the canning jars on their sides. Pour undiluted vinegar over them until they’re completely covered. Allow the jars to soak for 20 to 30 minutes. Scrub each jar with a non-abrasive pad until they are clean. For stubborn stains, dip a corner of the moistened pad in baking soda and scrub.

2. Cream of Tartar and Hydrogen Peroxide

Mix together enough cream of tartar and hydrogen peroxide in a bowl to form a thick paste. Apply this liberally to the canning jar stains. Let the solution stand for several minutes. Then, rinse it away, along with the stain.

3. Cream of Tartar, Scouring Powder and Hydrogen Peroxide

Mix together equal amounts of cream of tartar and non-abrasive scouring powder in a bowl. Pour in enough hydrogen peroxide to make a paste. Apply this paste liberally to the stains. Let the glass canning jars set for 30 minutes. Rinse them well.

4. Calgon

Fill a stopped sink or basin with enough warm water to cover the canning jars. Pour in 2 to 3 tablespoons of liquid Calgon water softener. Swish it around to mix it in the water well. Place the canning jars on their sides in the solution. Allow them to soak for 30 to 60 minutes, depending how bad the stains are. Then, remove the jars and rinse them.

Note-

No matter which solution you use to clean your stained canning jars, make sure to follow-up with a thorough wash in soapy dish water. Rinse the jars well and dry them with a soft dish towel.
