How to Clean Your College Dorm Room Quickly and Efficiently

Dorm rooms have to contain everything that we need to go about our days and make it through college. Most of what we have in our dorm room is necessary and all of it is crammed into a very small space. It’s hard to find time to clean it with classes, social events, visits home, work, and study sessions taking up our days. If you use this quick clean up you will make a big difference in only 15-20 minutes.

Before getting started you’ll want to get your supplies together. You’ll need trash bags, multi-surface spray and paper towel or multi-surface wipes, laundry detergent, and a vacuum or broom.

Let’s get started!

1. Pick up the trash.

Pick up the wrappers, crumpled paper, microwavable food containers, and empty pizza boxes and get it all out of your room and into the trash. Getting rid of the garbage will get rid much of the clutter filling up your space and if it’s been there a while the smell.

2. Make the bed.

Straightening your sheets and blankets will make a huge difference in the look of your dorm room. The small space makes the bed the focus point and by making your bed each day you will make the room look much neater. If you are always in a hurry, make sure that your bedding is simple enough to be made easily.

3. Get the laundry off the floor.

Stuff all of the dirty laundry into hampers or dirty clothes baskets. Make sure that you wash your clothes when the hamper starts overflowing. Clean laundry often gets left out. Put your clean laundry on your bed so before you can go to bed you’ll have to put it away. Doing laundry with your roommate can make things go quicker and be more cost efficient (ex. share laundry detergent).

4. Wipe down the surfaces.

Get an all purpose cleaner or wipes and quickly wipe down all washable surfaces. If you do this every day or so there won’t be too many times you’ll need to scrub.

5. Clean the floor.

Sweep or vacuum the floor. Only focus on the visible part of the floor. In a small room you probably don’t have much floor so this should only take a minute or so. You’ll be amazed at how much better it’ll look and how much dirt you didn’t notice before.

Put away the cleaning supplies and your dorm room is clean. When you have extra time tackle anything else that is dirty or cluttering your dorm room. If you have a bathroom or kitchenette you’ll want to make sure to clean those areas on regular basis also.
