How to Correctly Paint Your Home

Usually when you move into a new home you are going to have to paint. Most people do not paint their homes before they move out. If you have been fortunate enough to have your home freshly painted than you are ahead of the rest of us. Painting can be somewhat expensive. Usually for a gallon of paint it will cost you around $20. The good thing about painting your home is that you know what color was used and therefore you can use touch up paint of the same color. The hardest part about paining is matching up the color perfectly. Depending on the color of your ceiling you may or may not have to paint the ceiling.

If you have the paint with the color code on the lid than you can take it into the store and have them match the paint. If you have a gallon of paint without a code on the lid than you can take it into Ace Hardware and have them match the paint with their computer matching system. It might not be exact but it will match the ceiling enough to the point that you wont have to paint the ceiling.

You will need to buy painters tape which is blue in color. If you use masking tape it may peel off the paint if you leave it on for a long time. Painters tape is a lot more expensive and will probably cost you at least $20 by itself. You will need to mask off everything. This includes around outlets, cupboards, fixtures and everything that could get paint on it. You will want to lay down plastic sheets on all flooring to make sure the paint does not get on the carpet. You will want to make sure that you dont step in the paint and walk on the carpet. Also, make sure that you dont reuse the same sheet because the paint will still be wet and may get turned over when placed on the flooring.

I would suggest buying roller brushes, corner brushes and miniature brushes for the corners and other tight areas. You will need to buy pans to place the paint in. You will also need some type of extender for the brushes you are using. You will also need the plastic liners and the painters tape. I would suggest buying everything from Menards, Home Depot or Farm n Fleet if you have one locally.

If you do get paint on some of the trim you will need to either use water- once it drys, or you can try using a little bit of goof-off. This will take the paint off and sometimes the stain if you use too much of it. You can always take off the outlet covers which makes things a lot easier. I would suggest taking off doorbell boxes and thermostats also. At least you wont have to worry about them getting ruined.
