How to Cover a Hole in a Door

Discovering a hole in an interior hollow wood door is a nightmare. Even though most hollow doors are lightweight and cheaply designed, they aren’t exactly cheap in price. Even the cheapest selections can be quite costly, and repairs are never completely invisible. If you have discovered a hole in an interior wood door and you don’t want to spend the money to replace it, creatively cover the damage using one of the following easy methods. Chances are no one will know it was ever damaged.

Craft Foam Cutouts

If you are unfamiliar with craft foam, this highly versatile material it is available at most craft supply stores and comes in a wide range of colors and sizes. The sheets can be easily cut and used to create virtually any shape or design imaginable, and the possibilities are truly endless. Craft foam can be layered and used to create multicolored butterflies, designs, clouds, rainbows, or whatever else you can dream up.

If the door in question is located in a child’s room, consider covering the damage with a craft foam cutout and decorating the rest of the door in the same manner. Simply cut out shapes to match the color and theme of the room, and secure craft foam cutouts with removable putty or wall adhesive. Once it is entirely covered with shapes and designs, no one will guess that the door is damaged beneath one of the cutouts.

Mirror, Mirror on My Door

Depending on the location of the hole, you might be able to cover it with a full-length mirror. Shop for lightweight full-length mirrors, and take note of the width of the available options. Consider the location of the hole, and determine if the mirror would entirely cover the damage when properly centered. If the mirror will completely cover the hole, this is an easy solution for an otherwise expensive problem. Before long, you’ll probably forget there ever was a hole.

Roll Out the Posters

Have you considered covering the hole with a decorative poster? Posters aren’t just for kids, and there are numerous door posters to choose from. A poster just might be the perfect solution, depending on the location of the hole. Search online for door posters, and take a look at the many available designs. This is a relatively cheap way to cover up an unsightly hole that would otherwise result in the replacement of the door.

Kick Plates

A hole in the bottom portion of a door can be covered up with a metal kick plate. If a kick plate would look okay on the interior door in question, this is an easy way to cover the hole. Simply measure the width of the door, and shop for a kick plate online or at your local home improvement store. Chances are the kick plate will look like it belongs on the door, and no one will ever know it was installed to cover up an unsightly hole.
