How to Create Your Own Decorator’s Toolkit

Remember in order to make it easier to accomplish any project you need to have the right tools available. The first thing you will need is an Carpenter’s level. When making any project you do not want anything to be off, especially if you are trying to hang something. The level is also good for using as a straightedge when cutting. Next you will need an awl. An awl is a tool that looks a little like an ice pick. This comes in handy when you need to make holes in a piece of wood. 1. Caulk- This is great to use when you need to seal in holes, such as around the tub or sink.
2. Clamps-Great for holding objects together while the glue is allowed to dry.
3. Craft knife- Helps you to get a clean cut using any type of thick material.
4. Electric drill- A small drill will make installing shelves and valances a lot easier for you when tackling any type of decorating project.
5. Glues- You should stock up on every type of glue that is available. Such as glue for fabrics, and carpenters glue for gluing wood. Check your local art’s and craft stores and buy at least one of all the adhesives and glues that they have available.
6. Hot glue gun- This is definitely a must have. You should choose a dual temperature glue gun that can use both types of glue sticks.
7. Hammer- You should buy a claw hammer for all purpose jobs. This way you can use it for any project that you have.
8. Handsaw- This is ideal if you will be making a lot of projects with wood. You should make sure that your saws are covered with cardboard when you are not using them, so that no one will accidental hurt themselves.
9. Screwdriver- You should make sure you have both standard and Phillips screwdrivers that have tips in a variety of sizes.
10. Paintbrushes- Quality is very important here. You will need natural or synthetic bristle brushes. You should also stock up on disposable foam paintbrushes, for your smaller projects.
11. Painter’s tape- Great for helping with boarders and leaves behind no residue.
12. Pliers- You will need two kinds, slip joint pliers, and needle nose pliers
13. Tack cloth- This cloth is great for picking up sand dust.
14. Safety goggles- Very important to have whenever you cut wood or do any other type of dangerous project.
15. Sandpaper- You should make sure that you have a nice assortment, coarse, medium, and fine.
16. Sewing needles and pins- You should have dressmaker’s pins, sewing needles, heavy duty tapestry needles, t pins and quilters pins.
17. Staple gun- You should look for one that lets you push down on the front where the staple comes out. It will help when you need extra leverage.
18. Tape measure- You will definitely need one of these when working with any type of decorating project.
Once you have all of your items you want to make sure that you keep them stored properly. You can use a regular large tool box, or you can use what many moms prefer bins. You can buy large plastic bins at just about any art’s and craft store or your local walmart or target store. They work really well since you can just stack one on top of the other.
