How to Deal With and Fix a Bad Hair Cut

It can end with screams of horror, tears of agony, days, weeks or months of longing for the hair we used to have. It is a bad hair cut.

This has happened to most of us at some point in our lives. A simple request for the usual hairstyle goes horribly awry. There could be a number of reasons; your stylist had a bad day, or a long night before, the stylist is new, or the communication is just off (the difference between a stylist’s ‘inch’ and everyone else’s idea of an inch, for example) can lead to huge misunderstandings.

This can happen to men or women, boys and girls. But what happens next? There you sit, a mangled cut on your head, heaps of what used to be your hair on the floor. First, stay calm. Refrain from negative comments while the stylist still has scissors or shears to your head. Communicate your concern, trying to clarify where the instructions went wrong. If the cut is not finished, and it does not seem possible to clarify your instructions with the current stylist, ask for assistance from the manager.

If it is after you have left the salon that you realize the extent of the damage, again, stay calm. Contact the salon; usually they have a phone number provided for survey information and/or a website that will allow you to provide feedback. If this is not possible, or you are still in the location, ask for assistance from the manager. Stylists live on feedback, which leads to referrals and a steady client base. The last thing they want is an unhappy customer, so they will leap at a second chance for that first impression.

If you are left to find another salon to fix a proceedure that had gone wrong, start by asking for the manager of the location, explain your situation and request some additional assistance while choosing your cut and while working on your hair.

After all else fails, you are still not satisfied and the shop owner and/or franchise does not resolve your valid concern, you are able to register complaints about specific merchants with your state’s cosmology licensing board.
