How to Decorate Your Dorm Room on a Budget
Every dorm room comes with two main pieces of furniture; the bed and a desk. Your bed will become the most used and multifunctional piece you have so we’ll start there. When looking for a comforter your best bet is one that is double sided allowing you to flip between two different patterns. Once you’ve decided on the comforter start stocking up on large decorative pillows to match your bed. These can be used to decorate corners of your dorm room too lounge on and of course as pillows on your bed. Here’s a great tip to keep you within your budget. You can buy solid colored pillows, from Wal-Mart or Target and then hit a local craft store for pre-made beaded tassels that can be easily sewn onto the corners.
Next, the walls. Everyone with a new dorm room to decorate ends up visiting the poster store and has huge images of Jay-Z above their bed. Here’s another great dorm room decorating idea that doesn’t blow the budget. Depending on what you are interested in buy a couple large photo calendars and frame the pictures yourself with cardoard matte. Experiment with different ways of grouping your newly framed art.
Another budget option for dorm walls is strategically placed fabric. Again a trip to the craft store is necessary for this dorm room decorating idea. Look for sheer fabric in colors that will compliment your bed comforter and purchase it in long lengths. You can place the fabric above your bed to drape over it, along the wall behind your bed to frame it, or above the windows as a covering.
If you are lucky your dorm will include a sink and mirror with limited counter space. This area is more communal but you can still decorate your space and do it well. A good decorating tip for this part of your dorm involves searching for functional yet classy containers to hold and organize all your beauty and facial care products. Look for containers made of wire or mesh that are large enough to fit all your stuff but easy to keep clean.
Always remember that any dorm room necessity can be personalized by adding a little something to it. Many times this can be done for a lot cheaper and in the end its more your style. Happy dorm room decorating!
