How to Fix Common Wallpaper Problems

Wallpaper is just one way in which you can decorate your house and walls. Many people choose a simple wallpaper boarder, while others choose an entire wall. However, with age and use, the beautiful decoration can begin to show wear and tear. There are several common problems such as bubbling, staining, and tearing that happen all the time. Luckily, there are easy fixes for these common wallpaper problems.

Bubbling
Bubbling in your wallpaper is very frustrating. You may think you have to redo a whole wall, but you are mistaken. First, you must use a damp washcloth to get the entire bubbled area damp. Than, use a razor blade and make a V-shaped slit directly on top of the bubble. This shape will help to conceal the repair. Do not cut a straight line. When you have your slit made, take a small knife and smear glue inside of it. Then, press the wallpaper smoothly against the wall, making sure there are no more bubbles.

Staining
After years of use, staining is very common on wallpaper. First try to wash off the mark with warm soapy water. If this doesn’t work, than you may need to replace a patch of wallpaper with a new one. Find a spare roll of wallpaper and cut a rectangle piece larger than the affected area. Make sure not to interrupt the pattern established by the existing wall. You will be able to replace the new patch with the old once you remove the old piece with a damp sponge and putty knife.

Tearing
Rooms that are subjected to heat and humidity tend to turn up and tear wallpaper edges. Usually this occurs in the bathroom or in the kitchen right above the stove. This delicate problem requires delicate hands. Moisten the torn or lifted area with a sponge. Than, apply a small amount of glue to the wallpaper backing. Next, smooth and press the paper to the wall. Make sure you don’t use too much glue because it can create staining on the walls.

If you have ever tried to install wallpaper, you would know that it is not an easy task. After all of that work, you should know how to fix minor problems so the initial work isn’t for nothing. Since bubbling, staining, and tearing are the most common wallpaper problems, knowing how to easily repair them is a great first home improvement step.
