How to Improve the Security of Your Apartment

It’s not very difficult to beef up your home security. In fact, it only takes a few small steps to ensure that your apartment is as safe as can be. In this article I will go over some of the do’s and don’ts of improving the security of your apartment. You might be surprised by some of the common mistakes people make.

Don’t Over Do It: When it comes to locks, a simple deadbolt should do the trick. There’s no reason to have twelve locks on one door. As a matter of fact, adding more than one or two locks to your door is only going to weaken the wood and make it easier for someone to kick it in. There’s also no reason to buy the super-deluxe-industrial-strength-turbo-lock. Sure, some locks are better than others, but is that really going to prevent someone from kicking through a piece of wood or breaking a window if they can’t pick it?

Invest in a Loud Security Alarm: Silent alarms with state of the art surveillance equipment are all fine and dandy, but volume is what scares people away. I don’t know about you, but if I broke into someone’s apartment and an alarm so loud it could break the sound barrier went off, I would get the hell out of there. Yes, you will upset your neighbors that one time that you accidentally set off your alarm, but who cares.

Don’t Hide Spare Keys: Weather you know it or not, everyone knows about the spare key under the door mat. I’m pretty sure that stopped being clever in 1985. Besides that, they also know about the flower pot, the fake rock, the light fixture, and anywhere else you can imagine. Leaving a key anywhere outside of your apartment is like leaving a personal invitation for people to just let themselves in. Especially if the person who is planning to rob you lives in your building. Sooner or later, they’ll see you go to your secret hiding spot.

Always Appear to Be Home: I know, you’re trying to cut back on your electric bill. Well, most burglars don’t like breaking into homes when there are people inside of them. Leaving a loud TV, radio, or a few lights on while your gone will create the illusion that someone is home. Honestly, it will only add pennies to your electric bill, and that’s a lot less money than if someone steals the TV, radio, and lights that you didn’t leave on.
