How to Keep Hair from Blocking the Shower Drain

Having a clump clog your shower drain is quite annoying. The water just doesn’t go down, and you’re left standing in a pool of shower water. When the water gets to ankle level, you’ll start feeling gross. Believe me, as someone who has had long hair himself and who has lived with people with long hair his entire life, I have experienced this countless times. There are ways to prevent this. It’s as easy as buying a simple tool that can help pick up that lost hair and make it easy to dispose after taking a shower. So have a look at this short and helpful guide and your bath drains will never have an issue again.

1. Clean out the drain using a crotchet hook or your own hand . Wear a glove if you don’t want to touch anything nasty! I’ve done this step just using my hand before and I nearly vomited at how disgusting that clump of hair had become. If it’s hard to remove, take off the top and plunge it; hair will rise up if there is any. Before you purchase a device to stop the future clogging of your shower, you might as well thoroughly clean it.

2. Get out a ruler or a tape measure and see how wide your drain is. This is something I had to learn the hard way the first time I went to the home goods store to buy a hair catcher; I just didn’t know what size I needed. So be sure to record this information down on a pad of paper and take it with you when go to the store.

3. Head to a hardware or home goods store. Go find a hair catcher for drains. This device is especially made for shower drains and works quite well. If you are having trouble finding it, be sure to ask a shop assistant to help you. When I went, I headed to the bathroom supplies aisle and found it rather quickly. So look in that section.

4. Choose out the hair catcher that matches the width of your shower drains. This will ensure that it will fit properly and won’t be too loose. If it doesn’t fit right, hair will get past and clog the pipes. And that defeats the purpose of buying one. So make sure that the it’s the correct size.

5. Return home and place the hair catcher over the shower drain. Simply discard the hair it gathers after you finish your shower each day. I’ve made this a routine after taking a shower and it has kept my bathtub pipes running smoothly. Tell roommates or family members to do the same.
