How to Make Crayon Candles

Having decided that you want to make your own candles, the only thing you need to determine is what method you want to use. The easiest way is to buy kits to make candles. They will provide you with everything you need in a neat little package. They may be easy but they are not nearly a much fun and you don’t get to customize them to your own style.

One interesting method to make candles is to use old crayons for the color. How many times have you looked at your child’s crayon tin and thought what a waste it will be to have to throw all the little pieces out? Instead of throwing them out, save them and use them when making your candles.

To make candles you need only a few supplies. These include paraffin wax, a double boiler, string and assorted glass jars. You need to use a double boiler so that the wax does not overheat when melting. If you don’t have a double boiler put the wax in a milk or juice carton while melting it. Use a few pieces of string and twine them together to make a thicker wick. This will help your candles burn better.

Once the paraffin has melted, add your crayons for color. Carefully dip the wick into the melted wax coating all but the last inch. Then pour your melted wax into the glass jars you have collected for your candles. Try to find interesting shaped ones to make your candles more attractive. Then you tie the wick to a pencil you placed over the opening. This will keep the wick from disappearing into the candles as they set. If you want your candles to smell nice put a couple of teaspoons of vanilla or a few drops of patchouli oil into the paraffin as it’s melting.
