How to Make Curtains for Your Windows
1.) First measure your windows, than go to the fabric store to buy the fabric,also you’ll need some lace for the ends, you can add the lace wherever you like.
2.) If you want to have only a two piece curtain you’ll only need to buy enough for the two, if you want four or however many you need. Buy what you need to fit your windows, make sure you get the right fit for whatever sizes your window is.
3.) Work on one side (piece) of the curtain at a time, fold the fabric over about 4″ inches or so, than sew straight across with a sewing machine this is for the top of the curtain, this is where the rod will need to go, can be sewed by hand also. Do not sew the sides leave both ends open so, you can insert the rod. And if you want to add the lace after that you can attached it across the top front and stitch across.
4.) Make a small hem on each side of the curtain, and on the bottom as well,you can make the bottom hem around 6″ inches if you’re not adding a lace if,you add the lace no need to put a hem on the bottom part of the curtain. Now do the same for the other pieces of curtains you have, do the top, both sides, with a small hem, and than the bottom with a larger hem.
5.) Add your lace to the bottom if that’s where you prefer, or you could just add it to the top, depends on how you want to design your curtains, and how much lace you want to add to get the look you want for your windows.
You can even make curtains out of pillow cases, split them in half, and put a rod through the top of the pillow case where the big cuff is, after you split the pillow case down the middle you will have a place at the top of the pillow case to insert the rod, and than all you will need to do is stitch the sides,and the bottom of the pillow case, make a very small hems so, you won’t have that jagged edge from where you were cutting. You will have two pieces of curtains to fit a kitchen window, pillows cases already have a big cuff at the top that can be used just for the rod.
Make all kinds of curtains this way for the rest of your house, get different kinds of fabric you can make sheer or cotton,and even silk curtains for your windows. It’s cheaper to make your own curtains with just a few hems, than add some lace you’re done, you can even buy some rope or strings to tie your curtains on each side of the window so, they can stay open. You can even make your own shower curtains also this way, just go buy the hooks for your shower curtains, add a plastic lining to the back side and punch some holes across the top for the hooks.
