How to make Proper and Safe Use of your Extension Cord

Extension cords make bringing power to electrical appliances easier. When extension cords are used without caution or misused they can pose a fire hazard and put your safety at risk. These tips will help keep you safe while using extension cords in and around your home.

  • 1) Read the manufacturer’s instructions- In the instructions it will say what appliances are safe to use with the cord, whether it is safe to use it outdoors as well as indoors, and how it should be used.
  • 2) Never use an indoor extension cord outdoors- it will pose a dangerous fire hazard.
  • 3) Check the length and gauge of the cord- make sure the gauge is high enough to power the appliance at the distance you desire, a higher gauge is needed with a long cord to power certain appliances.
  • 4) Place the cord is a safe position- never place the cord under a rug or furniture, you should tack or tape the cords down .
  • 5) Store all extension cords inside- storing them outside can cause them to deteriorate .
  • 6) Always unplug extension cords when not in use- when they are plugged in they still conduct electricity .
  • 7) If the extension cord comes with a cover for unused outlets, use it- children can put objects in the openings of unused outlets or pets can chew on them .
  • 8) Never tamper with the plug blades or remove the grounding pin to make it fit into an electrical socket .
  • 9) When buying an extension cord get one with polarized plugs- with polarized plugs there are three prongs with one thicker than the others, they are designed to prevent electrical shock .
  • 10) Never use an extension cord with cut or exposed isolation- if the conducting wires are exposed there is a risk for fire, burns, and electrical shocks .
  • 11) Never try to repair a damaged cord- damaged cords pose a great fire risk .
  • 12) Make sure that the extension cord is certified by an independent testing lab .

Always make sure that an extension cord is fully plugged into the electrical outlet.
