How to Make Your Own Chips and Dip Set
The idea behind making your own set is to purchase a large and a small bowl set that matches or coordinates and put them together into one convenient piece. For parties and holidays consider etched glass or clear glass bowls of color. For tv nights with the kids, plastic sets may be the best bet. Dollar-theme stores are full of choices for the glass or plastic sets. Choose a large bowl to hold the chips and a small bowl for the dip, of course, but the small bowl must also be tall enough so that the chips don’t tumble into the dip.
To make the chips and dip set is very easy and requires only the bowls and contact cement. Spread the contact cement onto the bottom of the small bowl and position it in the center of the larger bowl. It’s important that you place the bowl just right on the first try since moving it around will smear contact cement onto the bottom of the chips section. Contact cement is inexpensive, works on plastic or glass and is dishwasher safe. The set will stay together even in hot, soapy water.
If you want to make the set but don’t want to purchase any new items you can use things you already have in your kitchen. You can use a plate for the chips and glue a small bowl in the center for dip. Or, use a rectangular tray and glue two or four small bowls on it – on the corners. This way, different dips can be served with the chips and there’s plenty of room on the tray for assorted chips. This setup is great for veggies and dips, too.
The next time you’re in the mood for chips and dip you’ll be able to use your new set and be very proud of it. And you can have another, nicer set to use when guests come.
