How to Motivate Yourself to Tidy Up Before the Movers Arrive

Moving house is one of the most stressful things you will ever have to do. Each move involves upheaval and stress for the entire family, whether you are moving down the road or to another continent. But one of the most challenging aspects of moving is getting the property tidied up in time for the movers’ arrival. How can you motivate yourself to tidy up before your household items are shifted?

Set Items Aside in Your Suitcase or Car

If you will be “camping indoors” for the next week or two until you move out of your home, start off by setting items aside in your suitcase or car that you will require. Setting items aside helps ensure your passport or airline tickets are not accidentally packed on moving day.

Moreover, you will also have a tidier, less cluttered home if you store important personal possessions out of sight of the movers. This is a good habit to get into early on, as the results could prove costly if valuable or important possessions are packed when they should have been left out.

Start Writing To-do Lists

If you are anything like me, to-do lists motivate you to get going more than anything else. Having a tangible list in hand is all some people need to get up and start making progress when they are about to move. A list of each day’s priorities really can help motivate you to tidy up.

If vague “tidy the spare bathroom” notes do not give you the incentive you need to clean, set more specific goals. What exactly needs to be tidied or cleaned? Do toiletries need to be sorted? Large or complicated tasks should be broken down into bite-sized pieces so that you do not feel overwhelmed with jobs that you cannot get to or complete in a timely fashion.

Set a Start and End Date

When the movers are due to arrive in a week, you will not be left with much time to tidy up. But do not just use the movers’ arrival date as the only spur to tidy your home. Set start and end dates for each room that needs to be tidied.

Start with the easiest room that can be tidied and cleaned within a single day and then move on to the next room, until you have repeated this same process throughout the entire home. Assign different rooms to each family member to help tidy the home more quickly and efficiently.

While some people enjoy cleaning and tidying up their home, others consider it a burdensome chore. When you are getting ready to move, it is important to tidy up before the movers arrive. This will help make moving day easier all round, as you get rid of clutter and only keep what you really need.
