How to Prep Your Apartment for the Winter Season

Living in an apartment, you may no think that there is anything you need to do in order to prepare for the winter months. There are however a few things that you will need to purchase, and do in order to make sure you are ready for any type of winter. Below is a list of how to make sure you are prepared even if you don’t have your own home.

1. Shovels are a must

Just because you live in a complex, and it states that snow removal is not your responsibility you still need to have several shovels in your home. That’s right, I said shovel’s, which means at least two are need. Avoid getting the flimsy plastic shovels that can easily break with heavy snow. If you have a car you can count on your vehicle being plowed in at some point. So in order to get to work, you will have to dig your car out. Also you may have to dig yourself out of your front door, depending on how much snow you get, since your complex may not get to eat in your time frame.

2. Rock Salt or Ice melt

Whichever you want to use make sure that you stock up on it. The apartment complex may put some out, but you can count on them not putting out enough. Be sure to have at least two bags in the house. This way you can toss it out on the steps, porch, or sidewalk, when it first starts snowing. This will help to keep the amount of snow that piles up low as well.

3. Food and water supply

Eve though we have not had a major storm in awhile, you ever know when it will be one of those years. You should always have ample supplies in your home just in case the roads are closed and stores are not open. Be sure to have enough food for at least two days, as well as water. Have non perishable food in your cabinets just in case your power goes off, and especially if you have an electric stove.

4. Get your gutters cleaned

Go outside of your apartment and take a look at your gutters. If you see a ton of leaves and other items stuck in there, call the maintenance office of your apartment complex and ask them to clean them out before winter arrives. This is something they are supposed to do themselves but very rarely do. Better to speak up then to have a ton of water pouring into your home, or over your doorstep before you enter.

5. Get repairs done

When you live in an apartment maintenance is required to make sure that they keep your sidewalks, steps, railings and whatever else needs to be done in top shape. Theirs nothing more dangerous than trying to walk on broken steps in the snow.
