How to Protect Pets from Household Dangers

Whether you let her roam about freely or she happens to escape, your home can be a dangerous place for your pet.

Although most are harmless to us, these items can be lethal to your pet:

Alcoholic beverages
Caffeine
Avocado – skin and pit
Chocolate
Cigarette smoke
Mushrooms
Raw meat
Raw onion
Raw peanuts in shell
Salty foods
Fruit seeds

Fumes from these products are harmful to all pets but especially toxic to birds:

Anti-freeze – will also kill a dog if he drinks it

Unfortunately you can’t remove all potential pet dangers from your home. You can, however, make sure your pet is at safe distance away from the following:

Cat litter boxes
Children
Unsupervised dogs, cats, or ferrets
Extreme heat or cold
Filled tubs or sinks
Open toilets
Frayed electrical wiring
Fireplaces and heaters
Hot pots/pans/utensils
Hot water
Hot electric/gas/wood stove
Medications
Open doors and windows
Open washer and dryer

Birds should be kept away from wall mirrors and rotating ceiling or window fans and uncurtained windows.
