How to Protect Your Home from Freezing Weather Damage
When the temperatures go below freezing, there is a risk for various types of damage to your home. You want to prevent these from happening because the damage can be extensive and expensive. There are many things you can do to keep your home safe and protected during the cold weather. Ice Dams
This is a buildup of ice that can occur on sloped roofs and it tends to be in and near the gutters. This blocks the drainage of water and can cause water damage to your roof. Make sure that the attic is ventilated well so that you can minimize the melting and refreezing of ice, snow and water. You also want to make sure that the attic is insulated well so that too much heat does not rise. First, put a water-repellent shield under the covering of the roof. This will help if leaks do occur and will prevent water from getting into the top floor of your home. You also want to ensure that your roof is in good shape so that it is not as vulnerable to damage.
Freezing Pipes
When pipes freeze, the water pressure can build and lead to the pipe bursting. This can cause significant flooding and damage throughout your home. You want to check all pipes, but especially those that are most exposed to the element, such as the pipes in the crawl spaces, attic and outer walls of the home. There are things you can do to prevent pipes freezing:

-Open cabinet doors to allow heat to get to the pipes
-Turn on all faucets to a slow trickle to keep water flowing
Wooden Decks and Porches
Wood can become more vulnerable during the very cold weather. You want to try and keep excess snow and ice from building up. Simply brush off decks, porches and steps that are made of wood and you can also use a wood-safe de-icer to add an extra level of protection. You also want to make sure that you are up-to-date on all wood care to keep the wood as healthy as possible.
