How to Recycle an Old Wooden Dresser

Did you recently purchase a new bedroom set and find yourself with one dresser too many? Quality dressers made of real wood are beautiful examples of fine craftsmanship and should not be merely tossed out after a redecorating project. Use your imagination and creativity to recycle an old wooden dresser to give it a new sense of purpose and make your life a little bit easier.

Use As A Gardening Center. An old wooden dresser makes a perfect area to keep your gardening tools organized and safe when not in use. Move the dresser down to the garage to to the storage shed and use the drawers to hold your tools, seed packets and assorted small pots. Use paints and letter stencils to carefully mark each drawer with the contents. The top of the dresser can be used to hold flats of flowers until you are ready to plant them.

Add To Your Front Hallway Or Mudroom To Hold Winter Clothing Items. Winter means an excess of clothing. Hats, scarves, mittens, gloves and extra sweaters and fleece sweatshirts for layering can easily become misplaced in a busy household. By instructing your children to hang their coats in the entryway closet and then filling the drawers of the dresser with their excess winter clothing, you can help to keep winter essentials from becoming misplaced and causing a delay in getting out the door in the morning. Designate one drawer for each child and make a random check every few days to ensure that the proper items are being stored away as instructed.

Use In Your Family Room. A wooden dresser placed in the family room makes keeping DVD’s, CD’s and video games and controllers neatly stored away until they are ready to be used far less stressful. The top of the dresser can be used to hold family photos and display decorative knick knacks to add to the room decor.

Extra Linens. Many homes have a distinct lack of storage space in their linen closets. An old wooden dresser is the perfect place to keep extra sheets, blankets and light comforters. Strategically placed in the upstairs hallway, every member of the family should know to make a trip to the dresser for fresh bedding on wash day.

Books. A family who loves to read surely has an excess of books. I am a book lover myself and I know how difficult it can be to part with beloved books. Place your old wooden dresser in an out of the way area and use the drawers to store the books that no longer fit on the family bookshelf. When your children become bored and are looking to read something other than what they have on hand, send them to the dresser to rediscover an old favorite.

Use Your Dresser As A Hiding Place For Christmas Presents. For years, I used an old wooden dresser in my garage as the hiding place for my children’s Christmas presents. By telling them that the dresser was for Daddy’s tools, they simply walked passed and didn’t pay it any attention. It was very convenient as I could park my car in the garage and never have to bring the shopping bags inside the house.

Gift The Dresser To New Parents. A new coat of paint dressed up with some cute stencils will make your old dresser a very thoughtful gift for new parents. Many young couples do not have the money to purchase a room full of nursery furniture and will surely appreciate the gift of a dresser to hold their baby’s clothes.
