How to Test a Dryer Outlet
If you have an electric dryer and it completely stops working, it can be a bad feeling especially if you have wet clothes that you need dry. Most people would instantly pick up their phone and call a repair man to come and take a look at their dryer. But, sometimes your dryer is completely fine and the problem actually lies with the electrical outlet the dryer is plugged into. You can easily perform a test with a voltmeter or multimeter that you can buy from most hardware stores. Follow these easy steps with your voltmeter to help you figure out why your dryer will not work.
- Turn on the power to the multimeter or voltmeter. Set it to read AC voltage.
- Set the meter to 240 volts or the next highest setting available on the meter.
- Put the leads into the top 2 angled slots on the electrical outlet.
- Check the reading on the meter. You want to see a reading between 220 and 240 volts for a outlet that’s working properly.
- Next, take a reading with one of the meter leads in the straight slot and the other in the angled slot. Do this with both angled slots. You want to see a reading between 110 and 120 volts while testing this way.
If you notice that any of the voltage readings are not correct, then the problem is the outlet or the wiring behind the outlet cover. Make sure you turn off the main breaker to your home before you do any repairs on the outlet!
