How to Write Your Own Wedding Vows from the Heart
The two of you set the big date and start planning the wedding. But you don’t want to use the same traditional wedding vows that are generally used. In your heart, they can’t possibly describe the love you feel for the one you are about to marry. Writing your own vows is romantic and gives the wedding ceremony a much more personal touch.
While traditional vows are intended to give the message of a committed relationship and marriage, many couples today are wanting something more personal in their wedding vows, something that can not only be a keepsake for their wedding ceremony, but tells of the special love that only the two of them share together.
You will want to keep your vows short, no longer than five minutes each. It’s important not to include anything that will embarrass the groom, the bride, or the wedding party. The vows you offer to each other can reflect a variety of things, such as how or when you met, what you love most about the person, what makes your love unique for each other, how you feel when you are with your love, etc. It can be a romantic poem or a love song, a prayer from your heart, or all of these.
The idea is that whatever vows you choose, it’s your wedding and the beginning of your new life with the person you hold dearest to your heart. Let the words speak to the heart of one you are marrying, not to the people in the audience. If you find it difficult to speak so personal in front of a group of people, try picturing that it’s only you and your love, and that you are speaking only to him, that while you are saying your vows to him, no one else is there, just the two of you.
Example:
On this day our two lives become one. The love we have dreamed of and prayed for is ours forever at last. Your sweet love blesses me beyond measure. You are my best friend, you understand me, and you know me like no other knows me. I entrust to you my heart, so filled with love for you. I promise to forever love and care for your heart, never to break it, never seeking to hurt it, always seeking to love it, for it is precious to me. Today as I give you my life, I want nothing more than to journey down this road together, following whatever path it might lead us on, to be there always for you and with you.
