Howe Caverns: An Interesting and Beautiful Adventure Underground
Howe Caverns was discovered over 150 years ago. It features beautiful rock formations like the Balancing Rock, Titans Temple, the Pipe Organ, and the Bridal Altar. The Bridal Altar is so named because of the “lattice” heart that adorns it, and because it is such a good altar. It is possible for couples to arrange to marry in this spot. Water flows through the caverns, and so it is possible to see the River Styx (named after the river of the dead in Greek mythology), the Eternal Spring, and the Pool of Peace. The final phase of the tour through Howe Caverns includes a boat ride on the underground Lake of Venus.
The entire trip is very interest, and its location 156 below the ground ensures that the cave is the same temperature year-round. This means that the attraction is open all year. Bring a jacket, though. The temperature is 52 degrees, and the cavern sports a humidity of between 70 and 75 percent – even in the summer. There are many stairs and walkways, and they are made to follow the natural way of the cavern. While this makes it easier for children and adults, the pathways are still not passable for large bags, backpacks, back child carriers, and strollers. Front child carriers are allowable, however.
Wheelchair accessibility is not offered. However, an elevator ride down to the cave’s vestibule is possible, allowing a glimpse into the cave. And the visitor’s center offers a complimentary documentary for the viewing pleasure of those in wheelchairs. There is no charge for the elevator ride, either.
Prices are $18 for those 16-64, $15 for seniors (over 65), $15 for kids aged 12-15, and $10 for those 5-11. Children four and under receive free admission. AAA members get the added bonus of a 10% discount with the presentation of a valid membership card when the tickets are purchased. Howe Caverns is open 9am-6pm September to June, and has longer hours July through Labor Day.
Howe Caverns is located in Schoharie County, in the Leatherstocking Region of New York. Nearby attractions include Bull Shoals Caverns and Diamond Caverns (make a caving day of it), as well as High Falls Gorge, which is rather beautiful. The Iroquois Indian Museum is within 30 minutes, and the public garden Landis Arboretum is a beautiful place to stretch one’s legs and maybe have a picnic.
Also nearby (within an hour) include Cooperstown (with the Baseball Hall of Fame), the Catskill Mountains, and the Erie Canal Village. The hotel near Howe Caverns makes a great base camp for anyone and any family that wishes to explore Upstate New York.
