Hyperemesis- a Debilitating Problem
Many people know that morning sickness comes with the territory of being pregnant. That is pretty much a given. But what is morning sickness comes in the morning, afternoon, and night just about everyday? This may be possibly a more serious problem that just the usual morning sickness associated with pregnancy. It may be a condition called Hyperemesis Gravidarum. Hyperemesis Gravidarm (HG) is a debilitating and potentially life threatening pregnancy disease that is marked my rapid weight loss, malnutrition, and dehydration due to unrelenting nausea and/or vomiting with potential adverse consequences for the newborn.
Many women who experience this type of nausea feel as if it will never go away. Because of the dehydration that can come with this condition, it makes the individual feel even worse. Many times they have difficulty with daily activities and have nutritional and metabolic imbalances. HG usually extends further beyond the first trimester of pregnancy but may be resolved by 21 weeks. But, keep in mind though, it can possibly last the entire pregnancy. Some women may experience difficulties because of their HG. Complications of vomiting can lead to gastric ulcers, esophageal bleeding, malnutrition and worsen ongoing nausea. Diagnosis of HG is usually made by measuring weight loss, checking for ketones. If the test comes out positive and she is having problems performing her daily activities, their doctor may prescribe medication for her.
Treating this type of condition can be challenging. Having early intervention is very important. This condition should be treated as a potentially complicated disease and should be approached as soon as possible. Women with more severe systems lead to severe weight loss and prolonged nausea and vomiting which can have adverse outcomes for both mother and child.
If you know someone who suffers from this condition, being a helpful support will mean so much to them. Severe nausea and vomiting is something no one wants to go through. By giving them extra love and emotional support will go a long way.
