Ideas for Decorating an Outdated Glass Light Fixture for the Kitchen
When redecorating a home, light fixtures are one of the first things to go, but they do not necessarily have to be completely replaced. If they are in good working condition, some can be decorated and updated in colorful and stylish new ways. You do not have to be an artist or a craftsman to transform a basic globe. Use these creative ideas for decorating an outdated glass fixture for the kitchen, and add color and style to an otherwise ordinary and/or outdated cover.
Necessary Supplies
Decorating an outdated light fixture is easy with glass pebbles. Choose a trio of colors that will coordinate with the kitchen color scheme. Otherwise, consider using clear or opalescent pebbles. You will also need E6000 adhesive, masking tape and the globe that you plan to decorate. It is also a good idea to protect your work surface with newsprint or paper toweling. The pieces sometimes fall off before the tape can be applied, and nine times out of ten they fall with the glue side down. Also, the tape will only hold the glass pebbles in place after the first row is secure. If the bottom edge of the globe does not come in contact with the work surface, you will also need a cardboard ring of the appropriate size. Make it just wide enough to hold up the first row of embellishments.
Procedure
Begin by removing and washing the interior and exterior of the glass using soapy lukewarm water. Dry it completely before starting the decorating process.
Next, pull out a piece of masking tape that will fit around the globe. Apply E6000 adhesive to a pebble of your choice, and stick it to the bottom edge. If necessary, place a cardboard ring beneath it to gently hold it in place until the glue dries.
Continue creating rings around the light fixture until it is fully covered. Each new row will hold up the next one. To keep the decorations firmly in place, wrap it with masking tape before leaving it undisturbed to dry. Gently wrap the palms of your hands against the rows to make sure that all of them are against the fixture. Let the globe dry for 24 hours or longer before attaching to the light. It will look unique and absolutely amazing in your home.
