In Memory of Allie
A few years ago a perfect Dallas, TX stranger, a stay-at-home mother of two healthy girls happened to be reading an article about a child who was terminally ill.
“I just couldn’t stop reading it every day,” explains Cameron Smith.
Nine-month-old Allie Scott, born Dec. 17, 2003, died of leukemia on Sept. 13, 2004.
A few months later Smith met Allie’s mother, Jenny for the first time.
As a result Smith formed Heroes For Children, a non-profit, 501© (3) organization to help kids like Allie because she wanted to help. Heroes helps kids financially who have cancer and are 0 to 22 years of age.
In March 2004 Smith held a luncheon at her home, four months after she formed Heroes.
Smith, formerly a fundraiser for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, began by gathering bags from celebrities.
The fundraising event was held in March.
In the end, Smith helped raise $138,000 in memory of a baby she had never met.
“I just couldn’t stop thinking that Jenny is just like me, this could have happened to my family,” said Smith. “Passion made me decide that I would lead this event.”
Heroes is a resource for families enduring times that a lot of other people couldn’t even fathom, said Smith.
The organization, co-founded by Larissa Linton, recently bought a wig for a little girl who lost her hair through chemotherapy.
“I watch my children sleeping and feel so fortunate,” said Smith.
Stores can donate handbags for a March 27, 2007 event called Heroes and Handbags.
Allie underwent her first round of chemo when she was only four months old. After three rounds of chemotherapy, a stem cell transplant was needed to save her life.
