Innova Disc Golf Gear: Pioneer Company Still Rules the Developing Sport

Although the sport of disc golf is not a major money making machine, one company has already cornered the market. The Innova Disc Golf Company is constantly developing new products and technology. They are as much a part of the progression of disc gold as anything else. The Innova brand creates the discs, the baskets and the bags; it’s only matter of time before they start developing courses.

DISCS

There aren’t too many disc golf manufacturers out there; in fact, there are only two major
(and reliable) companies who make discs. Discraft is worthy competition but the Innova brand has pretty much monopolized this specialized field, and for good reason. The Innova Disc Golf Company has the largest selection, the best new technology and, simply, the best discs. They are constantly producing new products and enhancing old ones. Innova seems to conjure up a new disc by the day as their competitors lag behind. Price is not really a detractor either, as most discs are in the same price range ($5-$20) regardless of the brand. Below I have outlined my personal favorites from the Innova catalogue

Driver – Beast and Monster, Champion Editions

I love these two discs by Innova. One, the Beast, is a super long range and stable driver. It is perfect for long holes where you just need to let it rip. It has the best hang time, in my opinion, of any of the Innova drivers and it doesn’t fade too much; making it ideal for straight distance holes. On the other hand, the Champion Monster is a driver with a ton of bite. It gets fairly good distance, but this Innova disc is useful because it fades hard. It’s perfect for dog legs or holes where the target is tucked away to the far left or right. Both discs are great and extremely different. Some other Innova drivers that I like are the TeeBird, Valkyrie and TeeRex.

Mid-Rang – Gator, DX Plastic

This is my favorite disc of them all. I’ve gone through three of these classic Innova discs. I usually don’t buy the more expensive Champion edition because I use this disc so often it breaks. The Gator is super stable mid range disc and is perfect for throwers looking for accuracy. There are times when I am throwing this disc so well it seems like I can visualize and hit any spot I am aiming for. Thank you, Innova.

Putter – Aviar, Championship Edition

At first, I didn’t like this Innova putter (I couldn’t stop using my Gator as my putter, go figurer, right). But after a while I’ve grown to love it. It has the softest touch and gives the player the best opportunity for sinking long putts. Innova’s Aviar has a great grip and is not very bouncy like a lot of other putters (keeping more shots inside the basket). I’m not the best putter (it’s the worst part of my game) but at least I’m giving myself the best chance by using the best that Innova has to offer.

BASKETS

Disc golf baskets (or targets, as they are effectively known as) are the objects in which players attempt to land their discs in (holes would be the traditional ball golf equivalent). I have played at many courses and there is only one brand of disc golf baskets that are the most reliable for consistent play. Innova’s patented DISCathcer Pro is far and away the best product out there as far as disc golf baskets go. Recently, they’ve started to offer portable home baskets; so the disc golf fanatic can practice in his backyard.

BAGS

Having a nice bag isn’t going to make you a better disc golf player (unfortunately) but it’s nice to have a good one if you’re a serious player. Innova offers three different bags to correspond with your level of play and dedication to the sport of disc golf, the Deluxe, Standard and Starter. Disc Golf bags are pretty similar regardless of brand, but if you’re sporting the Innova discs you might as well have a matching bag. All Innova bags hold at least 12 discs and come complete with water bottle carriers and side pockets.
