International Students in the United States

International Students in the United States will find a variety of support and encouragement available to them. There are many places and people where international students can turn. We will discuss some of them here.

Each educational institution usually has an International Studies Department. This Department concentrates in keeping up-to-date with current issues involving their student body population. They can provide counseling to help ease the foreign student into their new lifestyle. The international student will be helped with class descriptions and choices, living accommodation choices, and a variety of other areas. Also, the International Studies Department is a good place to turn with any question about your student visa. They need to be kept current regarding these laws and regulations.

Many cities around the United States have subcultures involving different races. For instance, in Miami one will find the ‘Little Havana’. There are many International Districts located throughout the country. Simply go to one closest to you. International students in the United States will be treated to local publications printed in their native language. There will be stores available selling wares from their home country. And, International Districts also offer a variety of cultural and social happenings. To find a subculture or International District near you, check around. Look for flyers, talk with others, and go to local hangouts. Or, ask your educational venue’s International Studies Department. They are a wealth of information to the international students in the United States.

Ever year it seems more and more international students are enrolled in higher education venues throughout the United States. This adds more diversity to our culture. Why not share this diversity with others? Teach others about your hometown cuisine, you may be amazed at how others will have a passion for your unique foods. Or, time permitting, share your talents and gifts with others. Every time someone shares a bit about themselves with someone else, a bond is formed. Those bonds make for memorable times. Many an international student in the United States has shared their country’s traditions with others.

Start a scrapbook of your stay in the United States. By being an international student in the United States, you will have experiences your friends back home do not. Scrapbooking is an excellent way to share this with them. Or, start a photograph album of your pictures after you return home. (If the airlines permit this.)

Enjoy your time as an international student in the United States. It doesn’t matter whether it is a short time period, or a long time period. It will only happen once in your life. Enjoy it!
