Jewish Studies Fall Lecture Series at Purdue

Purdue’s Jewish studies program organizes lecture series every semester, which is free and open to public. Issues presented in the series range from “King Hussein and ” to “Living on Writer’s Block: Henry Roth and American Literature”.

The lecture series runs in two parts, one is the noon lecture series and the other is evening lecture series. For the 2006 fall semester, the schedule for noon lecture series is as follows:

Idolatry and the Love of Appearances: Professor Daniel H. Frank, Professor of Philosophy and Jewish Studies Program Director at Purdue will present and will answer questions following the presentations. Date: August 23, 12:30 PM.

King Hussein and Israel, 1953-1994: A Complex Tale: Miriam Joyce, Professor of History at Purdue Calumet will present. Date: September 20, 12:30 PM.

Education or Entertainment? Hollywood‘s Influence on German Holocaust Film: Jennifer William, Assistant Professor of German at Purdue will present. Date: October 18, 12:30 PM. Venue: Matthews Hall Room 304.

Why did the Polish Holocaust Occur?: Allison Baumhart, winner of the 2005-06 Edward Simon B’nai B’rith Barzillai Lodge No.111 Prize in Jewish Studies will present her award winning essay. Allison is a political science major at Purdue and will be graduating this December.

Schedule for evening lecture series is as follows:

Living on Writer’s Block: Henry Roth and American Literature: Steven Kellman, Professor of Comparative Literature, University of Texas at San Antonio will present. Date: September 18, 8:00-9:30 PM.

The Nakedness of the Fathers: Contemporary Midrash as Window and Mirror: Alicia Ostriker from RutgersUniversity will present. Ostriker is a prominent feminist Jewish poet, critic and midrashist. She is the winner of 1997 Anna Rosenberg Award and teaches English at RutgersUniversity. Date: October 23, 7:30 PM. Venue: Krannert Auditorium.
