Just Shoot Me Equals Pure Comic Genius: Season 1and 2 DVD Set is a Must Have
After years of being shuffled from time slot to time slot, “Just Shoot Me” was abruptly cancelled in 2003. Yes NBC did quite the screw job on the last season. Episodes were only show sporadically. The season started in October 2002, and the “season finale” aired in August 2003. It was very difficult for fans to try and catch episodes when they did air. I caught the season finale just on pure dumb luck. There was no advertising or any other type of promotion.
I was flipping channels one night and stumbled across it. Plus, the network never aired three of the episodes in first run. The first time these episodes were ever watched was in syndication. Fans such as myself were heartbroken. Not only did we lose our show, we did not get a chance to properly say good bye to the characters that made us laugh so much.
For years I tried to catch the show in syndication, but the market I live in rarely shows the episodes at a decent hour. I missed watching this show so much! Then one day I found factory sealed Season One and Two DVD box set on E-bay for $18.61 with shipping. I had to buy it. I placed my order and waited anxiously for the package to arrive. About a week later, it arrived. I was beyond ecstatic.
I popped the DVD in, and I was not disappointed. I had almost forgotten how awesome those early episodes had been. I was amazing to see how the cast worked together with so much ease. Some casts take time to fall into place. “Just Shoot Me” did not have this problem.
As I watched the episodes I remember how I always wanted Maya and Elliot to hook up (yes, I was very happy when it did happen in later seasons, and of course I was crushed when the broke up.). I was reminded that Maya had a roommate named Wally in Season One. Wally magically disappeared sometime before the start of Season 2. Not only did Wally apparently move out, he is never spoken of again. I remember how much I related to Maya.
I thought she was so funny and smart. I also loved the way she dressed. Maya was pretty and intelligent. She always kept pushing to make the magazine more serious. She kept pushing Finch and Elliott to not just look at the outer appearance of women. Even though the show was a comedy, I really liked that. It took me back to my senior year of high school when I first discovered the show.
The special features section is a little lacking. There aren’t very many extras with this set. Granted the set includes two seasons, but Season One was only six episodes long. There is a behind the scenes/making of segment with the cast and the show’s creator. It was pretty informative, and it was awesome to hear the cast reflect on their time on the show. There is also a commentary featurette you can turn on featuring the creator and the writing staff.
In the featurette, they mention that there was a pilot taped before David Spade joined the show. The original pilot is not included in the set. The other features are nice, but not all that substantial. A Photo Gallery section showcases the Blush magazine covers used in the shows. That may be nice to look at once or twice, but it isn’t something that would make many people want to buy the set.
If you loved “Just Shoot Me,” and you miss seeing your favorite character make you laugh week after week, this set is a must have. The first episodes are classic, and they set the tone for much of the rest of the series. I didn’t even realize how much I missed the series until I sat down and watched the first season! Even though they did skimp of the special features, it is well worth the money. If the regular retail price is still a little too steep, take a look on Amazon or E-bay. You can sometimes find it for a good price there. Go ahead and feed your need for smart edgy comedy. Hopefully Seasons 3-7 will be out soon!
