Kid Show Content Review: Hannah Montana

In the episode, “It’s My Party and I’ll Lie if I Want To,” Miley is embarrassed of her best friend, Lilly, and sneaks off to a celebrity party without her. Miley’s night out is made more complicated when a paparazzi takes a picture of her that ends up in the media.

Gross-Out Humor

Near the end of the show, Miley and Lilly (dressed as their celebrity personas) are going to a party and run into one of Hannah Montana’s socialite friends, Traci. Traci tells Hannah that Lola (Lilly) is uncool. Hannah tells Traci, “Not as uncool as you were when you shot a snot rocket so big it hit both of the Olson twins.

Sexuality

Jackson, Oliver, and Rico (a young boy who works with Jackson at the surf shack Rico’s father owns) are looking at girls on the beach. Rico says, “Babe alert! Eleven o’clock.” Oliver says, “Woo! Older woman checking me out!”

Materialism

Miley is embarrassed of Lilly because Lilly doesn’t fit in with Hannah Montana’s celebrity friends, so Miley sneaks away to attend a celebrity party as Hannah Montana, without Lilly.

Miley’s dad seems perfectly okay with letting her go to huge celebrity parties, even if she goes completely alone, despite being a young, teenage girl.

Miley is concerned about impressing Hannah Montana’s snobby, condescending friends who don’t seem to have any redeeming qualities, just because those friends are popular.

Positive Messages

When Miley (as Hannah) sneaks away to the celebrity party, she feels bad about leaving Lilly behind. After paparazzi take Hannah Montana’s picture, she tries to keep Lilly from finding out to spare her feelings. Lilly eventually finds out about Miley’s outing, and her feeling get hurt anyway. When Lilly sees the picture that was taken of Hannah Montana trying to leave the celebrity party early, Lilly learns that Miley wanted to leave because the party wasn’t any fun without Lilly. Also, Miley realizes that she should have stick up for Lilly when her popular friends try to put her down. Miley takes Lilly with her to the next celebrity party, and tells her popular friends that Lola (Lilly’s persona) is part of the deal when being friends with Hannah Montana.
