Kid Show Content Review: Hannah Montana
Miley and Jackson sneak out of the house to go to the premier of a new Ashton Kutcher movie. When they get there, they are shocked to see their dad is there as well. Not only that, but he’s on a date.
Gross-Out Humor
Jackson is shown with the drawing of a face on his stomach. He squishes his belly together to make the face “talk”, and puts a straw into his belly button to make the face “drink” soda. Later, Jackson’s friend, Cooper, is also shown with a face on his stomach.
Miley and Jackson are hiding from their dad in an enclosed space, and Jackson apparently has a sign in an uncomfortable place. Miley complains because Jackson is on her foot, and he says, “I can’t move. I’ve got a for sale sign in my backyard.”
Sexuality
When Miley and Jackson go to talk to the woman they saw their dad with, Miley tells Jackson, “Don’t pretend you’re not the least bit interested in our future possible stepmom.” Jackson says, “Well, of course I am. You’re not the only one who cares about Dad. I want him to be happy too. And if she happens to have a hot daughter who likes to invite her friends over for pillow fights, well, everybody wins.” Miley responds, “Hello, back to Earth, Captain Hormone.”
Materialism
Miley and Jackson use Miley’s Hannah Montana persona to talk to the woman their dad was on a date with. Taken at face value, this doesn’t amount to much, but the woman is also working as a real estate agent and probably wouldn’t do business with a young girl unless she knew the girl could afford real estate.
Positive Messages
Miley misses her mom, and her feelings are hurt when she sees her dad on a date with new woman. Although the show is vague about what happened to Miley’s mom, the character is talked about as if she is no longer living. At the end of the show, Miley and her dad, Robby, have a heartfelt conversation about how they both still miss Miley’s mom:
Miley: “I just can’t picture you with anybody else but mom.”
Robby: “Neither can I. What she and I had was special. I can’t replace that.”
Miley: “Then why are you dating?”
Robby: “Because life goes on, and we gotta’ try and figure out some way to go on with it. Don’t you think your mom would have wanted that for us?”
Miley: “Yea, I guess she would have. She was pretty smart that way.”
