Lake Havasu City: A Different Spring Break Destination

Spring Break always brings to mind the classic quandary: where to go? It’s true that many young people descend upon places like Miami and Cancun, and even Las Vegas. However, these places tend to get very crowded, and things descend into a horrible, drunken mess, culminating in nothing but a cycle of parties and hangovers. Going to Lake Havasu City, in Arizona, however, can remedy this problem. A good nightlife is essential in any Spring Break destination, but Lake Havasu City offers much more than just all night parties.

Lake Havasu has nightlife opportunities surrounded by unique daytime experiences. Kokomos is located on the lake, offers a view of the famous London Bridge (more on that later), and features a multi-level, indoor/outdoor experience. Additionally, the club’s libations include a very strong specialty drink that adds to the fun.

But there are other ways to have fun in Lake Havasu City. It is located on the edge of both the Mohave Desert and the Sonoran Desert, on the border with California to the south and west of Kingman. There is plenty of opportunity for hiking in the midst of unusual scenery while staying at Lake Havasu. Other sites in the area include abandoned and historic mines, ghost towns, and wilderness areas featuring unique and indigenous wildlife and plants (including Saguaro Cactus).

And, of course, the fact that Lake Havasu City is located on a reservoir of the Colorado River is one of its main draws. Fishing and boating abound; you can even rent a paddleboat and explore the 45-mile-long lake that way. Water skiing, speed boating, canoeing, sailing, and jet skiing are also offered at Lake Havasu. Sightseeing tours of the lake, and its surrounding sand dunes and rugged canyons, are available as well. ATVs and other off-road vehicles can be rented for explorations.

Many people enjoy seeing London Bridge and its surrounding Tudor-style village. The London Bridge was dismantled to prevent its succumbing to the Thames and was reassembled at Lake Havasu. This is the actual famous London Bridge, and there is plenty of unique shopping and eating experiences in the vicinity of the bridge.

Other activities offered by Lake Havasu City include golf, miniature golf, iceskating (indoors, of course!), tennis, and a movie theater. The weather is especially nice around Spring Break time: not too hot, but hot enough that it is nice to go out and play on the water. Houseboat rentals are possible, and can make for a fun and unique way to find your Spring Break accommodations.
