Lake Tahoe: The Spot for Healthy Vacationers
The Lake Tahoe has quite an interesting history as well, as it was first home to the Washoe tribe, who pronounced the lake “Da ow.” The word, which meant “edge of lake,” later transformed into what it is today: Tahoe. In 1844, it was finally discovered by Kit Carson and John C. Fremont, who had named the lake “Lake Bompland.” It wasn’t until after a few name changes, including Lake Bigler and Fallen Leaf Lake, that the lake was recognized as Lake Tahoe. In 1858, Lake Tahoe started to get a large crowd of residents who were looking to become rich through silver mining. The lake’s population continues to grow to this very day, as in the last five decades, the lake’s population has grown by more than five times its size in the 1950s. Although Lake Tahoe has some of its residents show up in the summer time only, it now has over 50,000 registered residents.
During the winter time, Lake Tahoe is also fairly crowded, as snow sports such as skiing are popular in the area. Lake Tahoe’s mountains are often said to have some of the best slopes for skiing in the whole world. In fact, Heavenly Mountain Resort, which is perhaps the most popular resort around Lake Tahoe, has the largest ski area in California and Nevada with over 4,800 acres of land. The resort is also the highest ski resort around Lake Tahoe, as it goes over 10,000 feet high. Squaw Valley is another noticeable ski resort of Lake Tahoe as well, as it previously hosted the Winter Olympics in 1960.
However, Lake Tahoe is most crowded during the summer time as tourists and residents both look to have some fun in the sun. Water activities are, unsurprisingly, quite popular in the lake. Boating, tour cruises, and boat racing are all quite popular in Lake Tahoe. There are also many restaurants that are available right next to the water to dine at. Fireworks are often shown over the lake as well, which creates a really spectacular view. Lake Tahoe also provides some fun out of the water through it’s bountiful hiking opportunities and mountain trails. Visitors are also allowed to also go mountain biking or even camp in the wilderness. On the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe, you might also want to go take a look at the many grand casinos available out there.
Lake Tahoe provides a unique vacation experience as its visitors get to do a variety of healthy activities ranging from water sports to snow sports to mountain hiking. The landscape is rugged yet beautiful and it really is the perfect place to go if you’re a vacationer looking for some healthy entertainment.
