Lesser Known Uses for Hydrogen Peroxide
Hydrogen Peroxide has uses far beyond the norm. We all know about dental uses, its’ effectiveness as a bleaching agent and such. Yet, few of us use hydrogen peroxide to it’s full potential. These lesser known uses for hydrogen peroxide can save you a bundle by replacing more expensive alternatives.
Hydrogen peroxide disinfects.
Use hydrogen peroxide as a cleaner for your toilet. Pour about a cup into your toilet. Let soak about a half hour. Scrub with toilet brush. Flush. Cleans and bleaches as well as chlorine, without chemical harm.
Mold and mildew remover spray recipe:
To remove mildew spray hydrogen peroxide directly on the mildew. Scrub with a paste of equal parts lemon juice and borax. Rinse.
Scrub your scaly tub with peroxide and baking soda.
Hydrogen peroxide can be used as a bleach for cleaning older or heavily soiled bathtubs. Make a paste of baking soda and peroxide. Use it as a scum removing scrub.
Clean cracks, nooks and crannies.
Peroxide can soak into places other cleaners can’t. One of the best uses I have found is as a grout cleaner. Pour hydrogen peroxide directly onto grout. You will see it foam up. Scrub with an old toothbrush. Rinse. My grout has never been this clean.
Make your tile smile brightly.
Clean, whiten or brighten ceramic tile using the above method and a larger brush. What an extreme difference.
Who needs expensive brass polish?
Make your own cleaner for copper and brass by mixing one part flour and two parts hydrogen peroxide. Rub with a soft cloth and rinse in hot water.
Drain cleaning was never this easy or safe.
For minor drain clogs try this method instead of using corroding drain chemicals:
*1 cup baking soda
*1 cup salt.
*�½ cup hydrogen peroxide
*�½ cup white vinegar
Pour down the drain, in the order listed. Wait 15 minutes. Flush with hot water. If it doesn’t work the first time, call a plumber.
Add an oxygen boost to your dish-washing tasks.
Add �¼ cup hydrogen peroxide to your dishwasher with the detergent to boost cleaning power. It can also be used in hand dish washing.
Renew a yellowed wedding dress.
Yellowed items of clothing from the past such as wedding gowns and linens can be brightened by soaking in hydrogen peroxide. I once worked in a cleaner specializing in gown restoration. This was our secret. Shhh. Don’t tell. Do it by hand with very little agitation. Rinse thoroughly with water at the end. Be aware that items with dry-rot from age may not hold up to this treatment.
Say goodbye to embarrassing monthly stains.
Hydrogen Peroxide may safely be used to remove blood or perspiration stains from white cotton garments. Soak the effected area in it until stain whitens. Wash as usual. Some gentle scrubbing may be needed prior to washing.
Hydrogen peroxide as a rust eater.
Rust spots on counter tops may be removed using a paste of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. Apply and let stand about a half hour. Scrub and rinse.
No more fumes from oven cleaning.
A non-toxic oven cleaner can be made using a paste of vinegar, baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. Apply and wait a few minutes, then wipe off and rinse.
Pep up your plants.
Did you know rainwater contains hydrogen peroxide? That’s why plants thrive with a good downpour. Mix equal parts of hydrogen and water as a monthly plant spray. This gives plants added oxygen for optimum growth.
