Life from a Cat’s Perspective

It’s really dark and scary here under these bushes. I’m an orange tabby and I’m an indoor cat. I’m a boy, only a year old and I’ve never been outside. I’m really scared. It’s starting to rain. I don’t think I’m gonna make it through the night.

It all started yesterday morning when I was going for my morning nap in the living room. I was curled up comfy as could be when my owner brought in the monster.

I hate the monster. It’s loud and shakes the whole floor. She called it a vacuum cleaner. I ran from the living room to the kitchen and found a nice spot by the back door. I was about to fall asleep when she came in and started running water and making a bunch of loud sounds.

Leaving the kitchen, I headed for the hallway and curled up there on the floor. I was almost asleep when she came down the hall, rolling the monster right at me! I ran into a bedroom under the bed until she passed on by.

Hearing the monster roaring down the hall in one of the other rooms, I jumped onto the bed, curled up by the pillows and went to sleep. The bell-thing by the bed rang, and it scared me so bad I almost broke my neck jumping off the bed, running under it.

I left there and went back to the living room, circled a spot, plopped myself down, licked myself silly and started purring.

The house was finally quiet as I drifted into kitty dreams when she picked me up. I stretched and purred and was hoping she was going to put me in her lap and pet me to sleep. I loved it when she did that.

But she carried me to the kitchen, opened the back door and grabbed my bathtub! I squirmed away and ran out the door to the backyard. Glancing around at the outside world, I started shaking all over and was gonna run back into the house.

Then I heard a dog bark and ran as fast as I could. I don’t know how far I ran when I found a porch and ran under it, shaking and panting real hard.

The sounds all around me were scary and I was so tired. My head kept nodding and I jumped at every little sound. But I was real sleepy and I guess I just fell over.

It was morning when footsteps on the porch woke me up. I listened to the sounds of humans talking, walking down the steps, out of the yard. I slowly wandered out from under the porch, and came face to face with a big tomcat cat!

My fur went up and I jumped back with a screech. I’d never seen another cat before, but I knew he wanted to fight. I’m just a kitten. I tried to growl and I hissed a few times, but I was getting ready to run ’cause I knew he was gonna hurt me.

His screeches got louder and I knew he was getting ready to jump on me. A human came out on the porch, yelling at us. When the tomcat stepped back, I ran as fast as I could between the houses and jumped into these bushes. And this is where I’ve been hiding.

Why did I leave my owner like that? I didn’t mean to. I got so scared I just ran. Now I’m lost and it’s getting dark, cold and rainy. I haven’t had anything to eat and I’m so hungry. I’m so cold. I’m so hungry and scared and so sad. What’s going to happen to me? Is a dog gonna eat me? Is a grownup cat gonna beat me up?

Dogs are barking somewhere close. I can hear them and I hear cats howling. I want to go home! I want to go home! I want my owner! I want . . . what’s that I hear? . . . It sounds like . . . There it is again. That’s my owner! I need to get out of here and find her!

Wow, it’s raining hard now. There she is! “I’m coming! I’m coming! I’m running! I’m running as fast as I . . .”

I’m in her arms. She’s carrying me back to the house, smiling and petting me.

I’m home.
