Live Music Concert Venues in Springfield, MA

Springfield, MA. Birthplace of Dr. Suess. Home to the The Basketball Hall of Fame. Home to the Simpsons? Sorry, wrong Springfield (D’oh!). But what this Springfield lacks in yellow-hued cartoon families, it somewhat compensates for by having plenty of entertainment some live music venues. Anynyone living in or passing through this city of over 150,00 located west of Boston can find plenty to choose from.

Worthington St. comprises Springfield’s entertainment district. Many venues here have live music. For instance, Theodore’s (201 Worthington St, 413-736-6000) specializes in blues and barbecue, the classic comination, offering the former on Fridays and Saturdays and the latter (the BBQ) seven days a week. Blues acts include both local performers and well-established recording artists.

You can also find The Pour House (208 Worthington St, 413-732-7934) in the same neighborhood. This venue, along with a bar, tvs, karoke and other club-like accessories, also has local live bands playing every Friday and Saturday. They also run a summer series which runs from July to September and provides outdoor concerts. Performers in the summer series include some well-known acts like Barry US Bonds and other oldies acts as well as lesser-known local acts. Other clubs along this street with live music include the Fat Cat Bar & Grill (The Fat Cat Bar & Grill, 232 Worthington, 413-734-0554) and All That Jazz (254 Worthington St., 413-788-6646) which plays more than jazz.

The Hippodrome (1700 Main Street Springfield, MA 01103, 413-787-0600) is mainly known for its dance club atmosphere complete with DJs, they also host live concerts. Once a historic theater, according to its website, the venue now hosts such groups as the Black Crowes and Staind. The Hippodrome has over 2,000 seats for events, a balcony, and several bars.

Also historical but playing to a different crow is Springfield’s Symphony Hall (Court Street and East Columbus Avenue, 413-788-7033). The hall’s primary purpose is to host full concerts of the Springfield Symphony. But the concert hall also offers classical soloists, afternoon series, youth events, choirs, and musical theater events. Other performances at the hall include pop/oldies acts like the Kingston Trio and The 5th Dimension.

Another large live music venue in Springfield is it’s civic center, the Mass Mutual Center (East Court St., (413) 787-6610). While it does host its share of ice shows and minor league hockey games,this venue also offers concerts from major touring acts. Recent performers include Martina McBride and Motely Crue. Tickets for events are sold through Ticketmaster.

Geraldien’s is another live music venue. Geraldine’s, open seven days a week, has live acts including blues, r&b and lots of rock bands. Local/unfamous bands make up the majority of the performers, but some smaller nationally-known artists appear, too. Tuesday blues nights include opportunities for amateurs to step up or just sit back and listen.

Springfield, MA may not be the most famous city in Boston, or even the most famous Springfield in America, but it offers it’s residents and visitors plenty of choices in live music.
