Living Adventures: Kayaking and Adventure Travel for Women

An outdoor adventure travel company specializing in kayaking, Living Adventures offers an exhilarating new travel program that brings adventurous women together. Based near Bayfield, Wisconsin on Lake Superior, they are a passionate group of kayakers that have recently implemented all women’s kayak groups.

Their women’s program centers on embracing the energy of women and harnessing its powerful potential. They are structured on the belief that women have an indelible connection to the natural world and that it should be celebrated together. Whether you are a beginner or advanced kayaker, their programs are designed to meet the needs of women who are both experienced and inexperienced in the world of outdoor travel. A creative program design hones your expertise in wilderness travel and allows for both personal development and creative expression.

They offer many different programs as well as workshops. Living Adventure’s ‘Women and Water Interactive Workshops’ center on the history of women and nature sports. Women’s Sea Kayak Instruction is a weekend seminar that teaches the basics of kayaking and is oriented towards beginners to the sport. Recently they hosted a retreat for the Breast Cancer Recovery Foundation for women who are recovering from cancer. Kayaking is included as part of the retreat, reminding women that they are strong and able.

Living Adventures also offers many trips. One is a three day enactment of the life of a ‘voyageur’ and takes place in a specialty canoe that fits up to seventeen paddlers plus gear. Any skill level is welcome. On the trip you explore some of Montreal’s finest islands, the Apostles. There is an educational seminar on women and the fur trade that talks about their skills as businesswomen and carvers. Another example of one of their tours is for advanced kayakers. It is called ‘Advanced Paddling and Leadership Development Quest.’ This trip focuses on instructors, advanced paddlers, and guides who want to take their skills to the next level. It is intense and involves rough water paddling when available, processing experience, and navigation, as well as discussions about ideals of leadership.

Remember that each trip is led by a woman and all the participants are women. It is a celebration of the strength and ability women have and their ancient connection to the natural world. The prices are reasonable, the guides are skilled, and it is an uplifting and exciting experience for those who love kayaking and for those who have never been.
