Livingston, Tree City, Tennessee, USA

The idea was the brainchild of James Albero the city planner for Livingston. To have the single most planting of trees in history for one city.

Livingston is a small town in Middle Tennessee, and plans for the massive planting actually radiated beyond the city limits into other communities throughout Overton County. A county of just over 20,000 people.

Albero was inspired by a record set in the massive tree-planting campaign in the Philippines set a world record. 620,000 tree seedlings were distributed as part of a simultaneous plantings along highways. A tribute to the citizen’s interest in cutting air pollution and beautifying the islands. A creative way to cut air and noise pollution by cars.

Other events as part of previous Earth Day celebrations included most trees planted in one hour.

But back in Livingston, the event is targeted to a fall weekend. But a record for a county effort should still be met for this single effort. The reasons for the event are the same as in the Philippines, to help curb pollution as well as beautify and protect the environment. At the same time, setting an example for the world to follow.

All sizes of trees are being planted, but mostly smaller trees, all types, hardwoods and ornamental. They are being planted in private yards, fields, roadsides, along highways, in local park and wildlife areas, properties near Dale Hollow Lake, and school grounds as part of other dedication procedures.

More than 250,000 planting will take place on the weekend of October 20-22, if all goes according to plan. Many of these trees coming from nurseries in nearby McMinnville, also known as the “Nursery Capital of the World”.

Livingston’s Mayor, Curtis Hayes says, “I challenge any community to try and meet or beat our effort, in doing so, we all win.”

Overton County just celebrated it’s 200 birthday on September 11th. What a wonderful step into the next century, an investment into the future – in dedication to tomorrow.

The above article is a fiction that I hope to see become a truth.

A much nicer sounding story than the reality that is unveiled in – An Inconvenient Truth : The Planetary Emergency of Global Warming and What We Can Do About It – by Al Gore.

Efforts like these will have to become a reality as well to avoid the devastation that lies in our future.
