So, with the general cost of living on the rise, you’ve decided that sewing your own clothes may be a great way to save money -or perhaps you want to sew something for the home and have already bought your first sewing machine, but you’ve got a slight problem. You don’t know how to sew! Don’t worry. There are several great places to take sewing lessons in Louisville.

First, you may need to learn how to use your machine. Most places that offer sewing lessons in Louisville, offer an introductory lesson in using your machine. When inquiring about machine lessons, you will want to let them know if you have bought a Serger machine, as lessons for those can be more complex.

Next, you’ll need to decide what type of sewing projects you’d like to learn. Beginner sewing lessons will probably be the best way to start out. If you already have the basics down, there are several types of sewing lessons you can choose from: quilting, tatting, upholstery, sewing for the home, or maybe clothing.

Finally, you’ll want to find a place that fits into your schedule and budget. Do you want to take the sewing lessons during the day or in the evening? Do you want to take individual classes or sign up for a full session of sewing lessons? Below, I’ve listed two of the best places to take sewing lessons in Louisville.

Moore’s Sewing and Learning Center
Located at 4100 Outer Loop, Moore’s Sewing offers several types of sewing lessons. They are open Monday through Friday 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 in the evening, and they offer evening, morning and Saturday classes. They offer paid quilting classes on an individual class basis and a “learn to sew” program that offers sewing lessons that run from five to eight weeks. Depending on the length of the “learn to sew” class, prices range from $125 for five weeks to $150 for eight weeks.
They also offers embroidery sewing lessons for patrons who have purchased embroidery machines from Moore’s.

Aside from offering sewing lessons in Louisville, Moore’s also contributes to the Kosair Children’s Charity. They offer free quilting lessons to individuals with a program called “Project Linus”. The quilting classes are free, and the quilts made in these classes are donated to Kosair Children’s Hospital, fire departments and police departments for children in crisis. Jefferson County Adult and Continuing Education
Part of the public school system, Jefferson County Adult and Continuing Education offers a variety of sewing lessons in Louisville at different public schools in the evenings. The sewing lessons are offered in spring, summer and fall sessions. There are two sessions per season. They offer sewing lessons that cover the following types of topics: upholstery, sewing for the home, beginning sewing, tatting (Victorian lacework), knitting, and quilting. These classes are one night a week for four weeks, and students are required to bring their own sewing machines.

If you don’t know how to use your machine, they offer a one night course that is an introduction to using sewing machines. They also offer sewing machine lessons for the Serger Sewing Machine that last one night. (It is a bit more complex than other machines.) They also offer a one night class that is an introduction to sewing machines (that are not Serger). The cost for the four week classes is $75, while the one night classes are $35, although sometimes they run special discounts for their sewing lessons. They also offer gift certificates.
