Magnesium is a required element in our bodies. It is necessary for normal electrical conduction in the heart. Since magnesium intake in large quantities can cause diarrhea and other side effects, it’s recommended that the daily amount allowed be taken in stages during the day, rather than all at once.

People who suffer from kidney problems should not increase magnesium levels since the kidneys, when not functioning properly, cannot clear the magnesium. Those with slow heart rates should also avoid the supplements since magnesium relaxes the heart and slow heart rates. Existing bowel problems is another consideration when taking magnesium supplements.
