Make Halloween Costumes for Kids

Shopping for kids Halloween costumes can be a daunting task, especially when trying to find just the right costumes at affordable prices. Unfortunately, kids Halloween costumes can be quite expensive, and when you have a number of kids wanting new Halloween costumes, it can be utterly unaffordable. Free candy isn’t free at all when Halloween costumes are upwards of $10 each for even the most basic costumes.

Quality is another issue. It seems that although Halloween costumes go up in price each and every year, the overall quality doesn’t. Halloween costumes sold in discount stores are often so cheaply made they barely make it through a few hours of wear.

Don’t settle for overpriced low-quality store-bought Halloween costumes. Make Halloween costumes for your kids that will last long after Halloween. Make your kids Halloween costumes that can be passed down, revamped, and reused again and again.

The following Halloween costumes for kids are easy to make, they’re impressive, and they won’t cost a small fortune. Make these costumes for your kids, and make this Halloween one to remember. You’ll save money, and your kids will love these creative costumes.

Life-Size Bag of Jellybeans

If you like jellybeans, turn yourself or one of your kids into a big bag of jellybeans this Halloween. All you need is an extra large clear plastic bag or a clear plastic tarp, scissors, a roll of clear box tape, and about two or three-dozen small balloons of various colors.

To make a life-size bag of jelly beans simply cut arm and leg holes into the sides and bottom of a clear plastic bag. If you can’t locate a large clear plastic bag, make one by cutting and taping together a clear tarp.

After stepping into the bag and putting your arms and legs through the holes, fill the bag with colored balloons. Fold over the top of the bag, and tape it closed with clear box tape.

Bunch of Grapes

How about turning yourself or one of your kids into a great big bunch of grapes? This is one of the coolest and easiest costumes you can make for Halloween. All you need is a purple sweatshirt and sweatpants, a green stocking cap, and dozens of round purple balloons and safety pins.

Simply blow up enough round purple balloons to cover the front and the back of the arms, body, and legs of the sweatpants and shirt. Pin balloons to the sweats until the entire outfit is sufficiently covered. Wear a green stocking cap and you’re ready to celebrate Halloween.

Optionally you can wear purple gloves and cover your face with purple face paint or a purple mask. If you can’t locate purple gloves, consider dying white cotton gloves to complete your Halloween costume.

Scarecrow

Scarecrow costumes for Halloween aren’t anything new, but there are new ways to improve old ideas. To make a scarecrow come to life this Halloween you’ll need a plaid flannel shirt, a straw hat, old blue jeans, face paint, and straw-colored raffia. The raffia is a great substitute for real straw.

After donning the scarecrow outfit, tie lengths of raffia around the wrists and ankles beneath the sleeves and pant legs. Tie on additional pieces of raffia that protrude from beneath the clothing. Stuff raffia in pants and shirt pockets, and attach raffia to the inside rim of the hat. Make sure the raffia protrudes so it looks like the scarecrow is stuffed with straw.

Cover the face with white face paint, and cover the nose with a triangle of red face paint. Make red rosy cheeks, and create black stitches around the eyes, nose, and mouth with black face paint.

No. 2 Pencil

Are you looking for Halloween costumes that are totally different and completely original? This Halloween, turn yourself or one of your kids into a No. 2 pencil. All you need is a bright yellow sweatshirt, matching yellow shorts or sweatpants, black tights or black socks and shoes, pink craft foam, thick craft glue, scissors, and black peel and stick felt.

Make a pink eraser cap that wraps around the head using sheets of pink craft foam. Simply measure the circumference of the head, and connect sheets of craft foam by gluing them together to make a pink eraser.

Trace and cut out black felt letters to form the phrase “No. 2 Pencil”, and peel and stick them to the sweatshirt. Wear the sweatshirt, shorts or sweatpants, and the appropriate footgear, and you’re sure to make a point in one of the sharpest Halloween costumes ever.
