Make Your Own Dollhouse Furniture

Dollhouses are fun to set up, and some of the best furniture and accessories for dollhouses are made from items found around the house. If your kids love setting up and playing with dollhouses, provide them with ideas they can use to make furniture and dollhouse accessories using ordinary household items.

Dollhouse furniture and accessories made from items found around the house are often more useful and more stylish than furniture and accessories sold in stores. Besides the fact that homemade furnishings are inexpensive and totally customizable, homemade dollhouse furnishings are fun to make. You’ll be amazed at the things you and your kids can make with empty boxes, containers, lids, and scraps of fabric. The options are virtually endless.

Dollhouse Beds

Large dollhouse beds can be made from empty cheese boxes turned upside down. Simply turn the top of the box over, and make a mattress by gluing on a layer of batting. Cover the batting by gluing on a piece of fabric.

Make a headboard for the bed with 4 ¾ inch craft sticks. Paint enough craft sticks to span the width of the bed vertically and another horizontally. Glue the sticks together with wood glue, and let the glue dry completely before attaching the headboard to the bed.

Bedding, Curtains, and Rugs

Dollhouse bedding, curtains, and rugs are easy to make with small crocheted doilies. Fill in the larger holes in doilies with narrow satin ribbons. The same doilies can also be used for small throw rugs. If you want matching curtains for a complete bedroom ensemble, gather and tie doilies to small dowel rods above windows with narrow satin ribbons. Doilies make beautiful frilly looking curtains and bedroom accessories.

Matchbox Drawers

Matchboxes that hold wooden matches make fantastic dollhouse furniture. To make a large chest of drawers stack and glue together two or more large match boxes. After the glue has dried, the chest of drawers can be painted with acrylic craft paint or covered with wood grain contact paper. Make knobs by gluing on gold or silver pony beads.

Smaller chests of drawers can be made with smaller matchboxes. Stack and glue the boxes together as instructed above, and paint or cover them with contact paper. Knobs for smaller chests of drawers can also be made with beads.

Trash Cans

Do you need trashcans for your dollhouse? Save the lids from narrow hairspray cans. They make fantastic miniature trashcans. Add a few tiny pieces of crumpled paper to add realism to the display.

Works of Art

If you need works of art to decorate the walls of your dollhouse, you can use real photos. The tiny photos that are too small for anything but lockets and small pins are perfect for adorning the walls of a dollhouse.

To frame a tiny photo split craft sticks in half and trim them with a small hacksaw or emery board. Paint or stain the sticks, and glue them together with clear drying wood glue. After the glue dries, attach a picture to the back with small strips of masking tape, and hang them on dollhouse walls. Tiny photos with real wood frames are fantastic accessories for any dollhouse.

Tiny Tables

Have you ever noticed the little plastic stands placed on pizzeria pizza to keep the box from caving in? If you’ve noticed these plastic inserts you may have also noticed how much they look like little tables. Save these little plastic inserts to use as dollhouse tables. Cover them with table cloths made from small scraps of fabric or leave them just as they are. These little tables are very versatile, and they make great furniture for dollhouses of all sizes.
