Meet the World’s First Supermodel: Janice Dickinson

No one could call the biography of Janice Dickinson (born February 17, 1953 (or 1955 by some reports) in Brooklyn, New York) a boring one. Janice is considered one of the world’s first Supermodels (though some say that the honor really belongs to a model from the sixties named Jean Shrimpton) and others trying to follow in Ms. Dickinson’s footsteps have had some pretty high heels to fill. This article will chronicle her life in a time-line and will make every attempt to list, at the very least, the most important events of her life and career (which to someone as driven as she, I’m sure is pretty much one and the same).

Boring Statistics:
Father: Ray Dickinson who was career Navy Man and according to all sources and abusive man- physically, sexually and emotionally.
Mother: Jennie Marie Pietrzykoski Dickinson who was/is a nurse.
Sister: Alexis Dickinson a real estate agent
Sister: Debbie Dickinson who is following in Sis’s footsteps by being a model.

She started modeling at the age of fourteen and was turned down by many of the Fashion World’s Elite, including the famous Eileen Ford, who reportedly said “Those lips!” before showing her the door. A photographer ended up taking her to Paris after his girlfriend, the in-the-future famous, Lorraine Bracco, told him that she liked her look.

1971: Elite Models is founded in Paris by John Casablanca and started with Janice, Stephanie Seymour, Iman and Andie MacDowell.

1978: Featured on the cover of UK’s July’s issue of Vogue Magazine, and on the U.S. issue of Cosmopolitan in April.

1979: Once again makes the cover of Cosmopolitan’s September issue.

1980: Featured on the cover of American Photographer in December.

1980’s: She married producer Simon Fields and has her first child Nathan with him.

1983: Janice Dickinson started the Filmography part of her biography as a model in the movie “Exposed”.

1986 It was reported that friend and co-Supermodel Gia Carangi died of a drug overdose but it was actually due to complications from Aids.

1991: Is on the cover of October’s issue of Photo magazine (in France).

1992- Divorced Simon Fields.

1994: Daughter Savannah was born on the 23rd of either February or September. Janice claimed that Sylvester Stallone was the father but it actually turned out to be Michael Birnbaum, a well known film mogul. She went on to marry Albert Gerston sometime in the future.

1998: Makes a guest appearance as “Evelyn Maynard” on TV’s “Buddy Faro” and is one of the people featured on the TV special “Studio 54: The E! True Hollywood Story”.

2000: Has a guest appearance as a Supermodel (far-stretch, eh?) in TV’s “Zoe, Duncan, Jack & Jane”.

2002: She releases her book “No Lifeguard on Duty: The Accidental Life of the World’s First Supermodel”.

2003: Is re-introduced to the world as a sharp tongued judge, the Simon Cowell of “American’s Next Top Model” on UPN. Janice Dickinson also appears, as herself, in “The Self-Destruction of Gia” a documentary about the life and death of her best-friend, Supermodel Gia Carangi.

2004: Made a guest appearance, as herself, on the short-lived TV sitcom “Rock Me Baby” and was one of the hosts of the special “40 Most Awesomely Bad Dirrty Songs… Ever” and released her book “Everything About Me Is Fake… And I’m Perfect”.

2005: Supposedly quits America’s Next Top Model to be one of the stars in VH1’s reality show “The Surreal Life” (with JosÃ?© Canseco, Bronson Pinchot, Omarosa, Carey Hart, Caprice Bourret, and Pepa).. Janice later states that she was fired from Top Model but then returns during the season as a photographer (ironically enough doing a “plastic surgery shoot).

2005: This year she appears, as herself, on TV’s “Weekends at the DL” hosted by D.L. Hughley, “101 Craziest TV Moments” and on a July episode of “The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch”. She also discusses “bedroom etiquette” on an episode of TV’s popular “Love Lounge” and is a featured commentator on “I Love the ’90s: Part Deux”.

2005: Aside from reality TV she also has a guest appearance on the show “Charmed” as an alter-ego of the character Paige and herself and a role as an actress in the movie “Wassup Rockers”.

2005: On September 16th, she also participated in “Fashion for Relief” show held in New York which benefited the devastated victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Famous Interviews: This list will concentrate on Janice Dickinson’s interviews in reputable magazines, not tabloids. Now, I am not saying anything against tabloids. I am sure some of the interviews are legit that are featured in them; it is just that they can not be verified, so I can not in good conscious list them.

2002: September 28th has a revealing interview with the Seattle Post-Intelligencer Staff, where she talks about her books, childhood abuse and love life.

2002 In September she also has an interview in Los Angeles Magazine and is drilled by the “Shock Talk” man himself, “Howard Stern”.

2004: February 20th Janice appears on Dr. Phil where she discusses, among other things, her extensive plastic surgery and also has an interview with the New York Observer the following day. She went on to appear on “the Sharon Osborne Show” in March and the confrontational TV talk show “The O’Reilly Factor” in April. It is reported that her appearance on “On-Air with Ryan Seacrest” was cut short because of her abrasive comments and obscene gestures. She also

.2005: Is a guest on a July episode of “Live with Regis & Kelly”.

2005: Talks about “The Dark Side of Modeling” on an episode of the “Tyra Banks Show” with her former co-judge of “America’s Next Top Model”.

What is she doing now? Well, the “World’s First Supermodel” is continuing to add to her credit’s by opening her own restaurant named aptly “The Couture Cafeteria” which received a one star rating in the worldwide travel and dining guide “Zagat’s” and working on her own show that will rival “America’s Next Top Model”. It is called “the Janice Dickinson Project” and is scheduled to air on the Oxygen Network. She was ranked #25 in Channel 5’s “World’s greatest supermodel” where the fashion industry as well as other model’s had input in creating the list. To top it all off, she just released her latest book “Check, Please! : Dating, Mating, and Extricating” which offers, among other words of wisdom, dating advice from the famous dater herself.

If this biography of Janice Dickinson seemed contradictory and incomplete it’s because it is contradictory and incomplete. The one thing Janice is known for is to only let people know what she wants them to know. I am sure if asked about the discrepancies; she would purse “Those Lips”, arch that “Scarlett O’Hara Brow” and simply say “Buy the books and then, maybe we can talk.”
