Natural Alternatives to Viagra

Viagra and its progeny are really nothing more than 21st century aphrodisiacs, the latest in a long line of products designed to increase the frequency or enjoyment of sexual activity. You may have noticed that Viagra costs a lot more than the some of the old recipes, however. In fairness, though, Viagra costs considerably less than the horn of a rhino.

If you just don’t want to pay the price or you just want to steer clear of relying on a pill for improvement of your sex life, you might be interested to know there are some pretty reliable natural alternatives. Besides cost, another benefit is that there are usually less risks of side effects. Combined that with the fact that most of them are good for other health problems like weak cardiovascular systems and hormone regulation and there’s just really no reason not to take a look.

Natural alternatives for improving sexuality are mostly derived from herbs and are available in supplement form. Like the use of supplements for any other health problem, be sure to check with your doctor first to make sure you are taking the right dosage and it’s not interfering with any medication you may be on.

We’ll start out the tour with that that good old standby Ginkgo Biloba. Think of GB, in fact, as a real standup kind of guy, as it helps to relax blood vessels, allowing for better circulation of the red stuff all the way down to the penis. Remember, good blood flow is essential for erections, so if your diet is high in fatty foods, you should lay off those for a while if you are having problems. If you don’t get the blood to where it needs to be, erectile dysfunction rules, no matter how excited you are everywhere else. Not to mention that the blood will flow up to your brain more easily as well and as we’ve all been told, it is the brain that that is your key erogenous zone. GB works the same way with women, improving circulation to the vaginal zone, helping to improve not only lubrication but how well you will respond to intimate contact. Just be sure to check with your doctor if you are taking any blood thinners because Gingko can increase their effects.

Ginseng is another favorite herb that crops a lot. As a natural alternative to Viagra, it works best as a stress-releaser and stamina-booster. Ginseng works by stimulating the adrenal glands to let loose with a little flood of substances that lower the hormones causing your stress. Ginseng also helps in getting the blood flow to all the right places. If you are dealing with high blood pressure, however, you probably want to stay away from this one because it can increase it more. It’s also been known to cause diarrhea, which for most people definitely doesn’t come under the banner of making sex better.

Then there’s Muira Puama, which is better known as, I kid you not, “potency wood.” Okay, now that you’ve got that out of your system, Muira Puama is a traditional Brazilian aphrodisiac made from the bark and roots of the tree from which it is derived. It works because it contains compounds that boost testosterone. Testosterone, despite what you may have gleaned from the common use of the term, is a hormone that plays a major role in the sex drives of both men and women. This boost of testosterone may just help you last a little longer and improve your performance as well. It also contains certain oils that have been shown to react with the brain in such a way that your sex drive may get reignited a little faster. So in additional to increasing the length of your sexual encounter, it may also be possible to increase the frequency. Not a bad deal either way, really. The side effect here is the opposite of that of Ginseng in that lowers blood pressure so if you already suffer from that malady, definitely check with your physician.

Another natural alternative to Viagra can be found in Arginine. An amino acid that can be taken in supplements twice a day, it works by relaxing muscle contractions, improving the flow of blood to the pelvic area. (Sensing a theme here?) Be aware, however, that Arginine isn’t just good for improving your sex life, but also for improving the chances for what sex is really about: Procreation! Arginine may help with upping your libido, but it may also up your sperm count which could end up upping the number of dependents on your tax form. Aside from this, consider that it has been to shown to stimulate replication of the herpes simplex virus so don’t take this one if you are subject to cold sores.

This last one is just for the females. It’s called–here we go again–Dong Quai, and it’s been used as an aphrodisiac in Asia for a millennium or two. It’s a root-based herb that–you guessed it–stimulates blood flow. Technically it’s used to treat menstrual problems, especially those involving severe cramps and irregularity. Other studies have discovered evidence linking it not only to increased desire, but in actually increasing the intensity of orgasm. Just be aware that not only should no women who is pregnant take Dong Quai, but also be careful if you are particularly light in complexion as increases one’s sensitivity to sunlight. Also stay away from this if you have any kind of blot-clotting problems.

As you can see, when it comes to increasing sexual desire and enjoyment, we start at the heart and end at theâÂ?¦well, you know. Good blood circulation is extremely key to improving sexual function so even if you don’t check out any of these natural alternatives to Viagra, you can still probably help yourself out by eating foods rich in Vitamin C and the Vitamin B series, cutting down on fatty foods and alcohol and, as usual, not smoking. Exercise too will help get your blood flowing and, let’s face it, the only exercise almost all of us enjoy isâÂ?¦
