Nightlife in Historical Downtown Johnson City
First, let’s get you to the neighborhood. Take Exit 35 off of Interstate 181. Head north down Roan St. to E. Market Street. Between the interstate and E. Market you will discover an abundance of fine dining establishments such as : Red Lobster, Hooters, Applebee’s and the famous Lone Star Steakhouse. At E. Market turn right go 1 block to Buffalo St., then turn left to E. Main St. , park and begin to enjoy the experience.
Let’s take you first to The Assembly at 236 E. Main. Here you can enjoy free coffee, surf the Internet, or join the fine people of the establishment who also use this building as a church. More can be learned about The Assembly at http://theassemblyjc.org
Next, let’s cross the street to Gatsby’s. This pub is a genuine flashback into the 1920-1930’s era with authentic poles, paneling and architecture from the era. Inside you will find a myriad of drink specials, friendly people and pool tables to start your evening. This club also hosts Karaoke nights on Wednesday and Friday’s and as well a Live band usually brings in each weekend.
Next door to Gatsby’s is a billiard hall that still bares the name Masons from 1950. Numan’s is a unique experience in itself.
Upon entering the front door you may veer right to a wonderful restaurant that serves everything from Rib-eye to Barbecued Pork. There’s a generous children’s menu, and the food and service is wonderful. Veer left and you will find yourself amidst alot of pool tables, and usually just as many contenders looking for a good game. Walk forward from the front door and you will be directly at the bar, which also has the closest neighborhood ATM. You can see more about Numan’s at http://www.numanbilliards.com .
After leaving Numan’s then head left 1 block to The Hide Away. If you enjoy Punk, Alternative or Ska style music this bar is usually as loud as the bands.
If this is a little too alternative for you then head right outside Numan’s instead. First you will pass the artsy Pharaoh’s. The sculptures and plants visible from the outside window should catch your attention. If you lead a sexually alternative lifestyle, you have found an establishment that will welcome you with genuine kindness and hospitality. Further down is Halo’s which is more of a layed back lounge type pub, complete with couches, and a hi fi sound system usually playing the Grateful Dead, Phish or music from that genre.
There are a few more clubs past Halo’s to ensure your desires for the evening are met, and you leave Johnson City with a little history to accompany your hang over.
