No A/C? What to Do to Keep Yourself Cool
Fans Are Our Friends
Ceiling fans are great to run to keep your home cool, and yourself, if you don’t have those consider using a boxed fan. Place a bowl of ice in front of a fan, so it isn’t just circulating the warm air in the room but will blow cool air in your direction, like an air conditioner. Consider having a fan in every room that you want to keep cool.
Freeze More Than Ice
Freeze a wet wash cloth for your face, or a wet towel to lay on. You can put a damp t-shirt in the fridge, and then wear it. People have been know to put pillows in the freezer and then curl up with them to stay cool.
Utilize Your Basement, If You Have a Basement
Well if you have a basement the first thing you should do is hide out there, even if you don’t have an air conditioner upstairs the basement will be cooler. Also, if you can try and safely angle a fan on the stairs to your basement pointing in the direction of the upstairs you will get cool air to blow onto you, if you are in the room at the top of the stairs, sort of like an air conditioner.
Leave Your Home
If you need a quick way to cool down, leave your home and find some free air conditioning, that is unless you are trying to avoid being around air conditioners, and go to the library or store.
Avoid the South Side of Your House
Where the sun is shining is going to be the hottest, if you can stay on the north side of your house you will be cooler.
Take Cold Showers, or At Least End Your Shower with Cool Water
When you take a shower if you don’t want to take the entire shower in cool water, just make sure that when you end your shower that you run some cool water over your body. Even taking a shower at the beginning of the day is a good idea, it will keep you cooler if you are cleaner. Taking one at night can help you sleep better too.
Stay Hydrated, By Drinking Solely or Nearly Solely Water
Drink water, then drink some more water. You will stay the most hydrated if you avoid drinking alcoholic and caffeinated beverages. Who needs an air conditioner to stay cool when you have water. Flavor your water with a lemon if you tire of plain old water and add ice to make it really refreshing.
Dress Lightly and Keep a Spray Bottle Near By
The less you wear the less heat you are keeping in your body, keep in mind though that you wear enough that you feel comfortable and the people around you will feel comfortable. Have a spray bottle that is full of clean water to mist yourself with, to help you cool off. Consider keeping it in the fridge so it stays cool.
Jump in the Pool, or Bath
Okay, not everyone has a pool but nearly everyone has a bathtub, so fill that up and soak in the cool water to cool off.
You will find that there are many things that you can do to keep yourself cool, even if you don’t have an air conditioner in your home.
